Kusanagi has always been a band that thrives on the convergence of influences. Formed in Liverpool in 2011, the four-piece—Alan Caulton (guitar), Ben Davis (guitar), Dan Hunt (bass), and Dean Caffery (drums)—draws from a broad sonic spectrum, blending elements of post-rock, electronic, metal, synthwave, and classical into an adventurous, instrumental narrative.
With Paramnesia, their upcoming album set for release on May 30, 2025, via Ripcord Records, the band refines this vision, crafting a soundscape that feels like slipping between the edges of reality and a dream state.
The album’s title itself suggests a blurred line between memory and illusion, a concept that carries into its sweeping, atmospheric compositions.
But no sound exists in a vacuum. The DNA of Paramnesia is woven with the influence of artists who have redefined instrumental music and atmospheric storytelling. Today, Kusanagi shares five of the most crucial inspirations behind their new record.

Mogwai:
One of our favourite bands, evokes a sense of contemplation, with a unique ability to convey both melancholy and euphoria without the need for words. they are atmospheric, powerful, melodic and have a punk attitude. The Daddies of Post Rock, it’s hard as an instrumental band not to be influenced by them. they create expansive soundscapes characterized by quiet, atmospheric passages that build into intense, powerful climaxes.
Their music often features a blend of guitar-driven melodies, electronic elements, and minimalist rhythms. Mogwai’s style is frequently instrumental, with an emphasis on mood and texture rather than traditional song structures or lyrics.
Deftones:
The band’s music often combines heavy, distorted riffs with lush, atmospheric textures. This contrast between aggression and tranquility is a defining characteristic, and it’s influenced countless bands across genres, from nu-metal to post-metal. Their influence is vast, touching on many genres, and they’ve shaped the sound of modern metal, post-metal, and alternative music, making them one of the most enduring and important acts in the heavy music scene.

The Cure:
The Cure pioneered a unique blend of post-punk, gothic rock, and new wave, creating a sound that influenced numerous bands in these genres. Their ability to experiment with various styles—from dark and atmospheric to upbeat pop—helped shape the direction of alternative music in the ’80s and beyond. The Cure’s innovation in sound, lyrics, aesthetics, and their ability to shape and define a cultural movement make them an influential force in music history. They have a distinct sound, which definitely influenced us on PARAMNESIA.
Animals as Leaders:
Amazing Rhythms, strange and innovative guitar techniques. Lots of groove and brilliant crafted songs. They were definitely a band we admire and even though we don’t sound anything like them, you can hear the influence especially in the guitars on our album.
And So I Watch You From Afar:
Again punk attitude, amazing melodies and riffs for days. They are becoming pioneers in the Instrumental world. One of the best live bands going. Mixing Post Rock with Math and Punk they have influenced alot. We were also very fortunate to play with them twice which rubbed off on us in some ways.
