GOOD SAINT NATHANAEL, the solo venture of Nate Allen, is back with a new album titled “I Write The Songs I Need.” Described as “folky, rock n’ roll poetry wrapped around pop hooks,” this album dives deep into personal struggles and emotional introspection.

At the forefront today is the single “Everything’s Perfect, Everything’s Fine,” accompanied by a minimalist video that captures the essence of melodic folk rock. We’re pleased to give you its first airing today!

“What will happen when we cross the line to admit we need help? This question is central to this song,” Allen states.

“Much of my stress and emotional difficulty comes from trying to act like things are ok when they aren’t. I’ve been working on the factors that keep me from feeling ok with admitting my needs and difficulties throughout the making of this record. It’s proven to be difficult but necessary work.” This honesty is the backbone of “Everything’s Perfect, Everything’s Fine,” a track inspired by a meme and composed during a daily drive to work.

“I Write The Songs I Need” follows 2019’s “Hide No Truth,” emerging from a similar collection of demos. Allen, also known for his work with DESTROY NATE ALLEN, channels a more introspective energy in this solo project.

While DESTROY NATE ALLEN is celebrated for joyful and playful performances, GOOD SAINT NATHANAEL delves into deeper, personal narratives. “I was dealing with overwhelming stress and exhaustion,” Allen recalls. “When I stumbled onto this collection of songs I’d first demoed in 2014, it felt like what I needed to be singing now, for my own encouragement.”

The album is a two-track two-mic record, devoid of additional layers, allowing the powerful lyrics to take center stage. It draws inspiration from artists such as JOHNNY CASH, HAVALINA, VIOLENT FEMMES, and DON MCLEAN. Some tracks also bear the influence of TOM PETTY, along with a blend of gospel records from the 40s and 50s and Allen’s lifelong love of punk rock. It’s a lively collection of singalongs and poignant anthems, embracing the moment despite hardships.

After rediscovering the demos, I Write The Songs I Need was worked on for two months and recorded in less than a week.

“Tessa asked if I could record the songs in time for our upcoming West Coast tour in a week, and I said I thought it was possible. I went down to the basement and in four sessions, the record was tracked.” Allen mixed the album mid-flight on his way to Portland and met with Gus Elg for mastering the next day, showcasing a rapid yet meticulous production process.

Each song on the album brings a unique perspective. “Extension Chords” reflects Allen’s struggle with workaholism and people-pleasing tendencies. “I Think You’ve Got Potential” conveys feelings of rejection and isolation through specific experiences. The upbeat “Everything’s Perfect, Everything’s Fine” challenges listeners to step forward despite fears and complex expectations.
