They call themselves a “post progressive band” and they find their art deeply relating to a subtle component of fate called Underfate. Kwidzyn, Poland’s UNDERFATE were featured on the “Cold Wind is the Promise of a Storm” post rock compilation (streaming at this location) and I am pleased to give you my English/Polish interview with the band, sharing their thoughts on their influences, live performances and plans for the future.

[EN] Hey guys! How are you? How’s 2015 been treating you so far? You’ve played a couple of gigs this year, with a few more already lined up for the coming weeks. How tough was translating the new recordings into live music?
[PL] Cześć Panowie! Co słychać w tym gorącym dla muzyki roku? Zagraliście kilka koncertów, a kilka kolejnych zapowiedzieliście na nadchodzące tygodnie. Jak trudno było przełożyć nowe kawałki na muzykę na żywo?
[EN] Thanks! From our point of view 2015 is, above all, a year of debut album, which we’ve worked at past two years, including the short story and the cover art. When we received six big boxes full of CDs, we felt some kind of relief. Presently, we try to promote our album as much as it’s possible, collect new fans and play gigs from to time to time, as you mentioned. If it’s about live performances, we make every effort, to play as precisely as we can with regards to effects made in the studio, what’s more, playing live is more energetic. We maybe sound more post-rock, less metal, but certainly not worse.
[PL] Dzięki. Dla nas rok 2015 to przede wszystkim rok wydania debiutanckiej płyty, nad którą pracowaliśmy prawie dwa lata, wliczywszy wymyślenie konceptu oraz oprawę graficzną. Po odebraniu 6 dużych kartonów z płytami z tłoczni zdecydowanie odczuliśmy ulgę. Obecnie promujemy materiał, budujemy swój fanbase i co nieco koncertujemy, jak wspominałeś. Co do wykonania na żywo: staramy się jak najbardziej precyzyjnie wykonywać swoje partie, zachowując podobieństwo nałożonych w studio efektów, jednak na livie bardzo istotna jest energia na scenie. Brzmimy nieco inaczej niż na krążku: może bardziej post-rockowo, mniej metalowo, ale na pewno nie gorzej.
[EN] Considering the instrumental nature of your music, what do you hope audiences will take away from your performances?
[PL] Mając na uwadze instrumentalny character Waszej muzyki, co spodziewacie się, że słuchacze wyniosą z Waszych występów?
[EN] Our goal is to let audience empathize with mood of the album. It’s not just a music, but graphical/emotional performance as well. That three elements are inseparable so we used them to create short story, the whole album is about. Reading this story for the first time may be confusing, it’s written as a diary by Mercury, so phrases are often taken out of context and they seem not to make any sense. Mercury is a boy which has woken up from the coma after 14 years. He struggles with everyday strange visions from the past, which he cannot explain to himself logically. Considering music, story, graphics and lights as a unity, we want the audience to be conscious and aware of that. so they can entirely experience the performance.
[PL] Chcemy, by publiczność oddała się nastrojowi tego albumu. To nie tylko muzyka, ale przede wszystkim wizualizacja graficzna, a może nawet emocjonalna, konceptu. Na całkowity odbiór historii składają się trzy nierozłączne elementy (muzyka, video, tekst). Czytając historię po raz pierwszy historię można poczuć się nieco zagubionym, ponieważ sposób opowiadania w formie dziennika Mercurego zawiera zdania, który wydają się być niezrozumiałe bez znajomości kontekstu. Mercury to chłopiec budzący się po 14 latach śpiączki. Walczy z codziennymi dziwnymi wizjami z przeszłości, których nie może wytłumaczyć racjonalnie. Chcemy, żeby publika mając świadomość przekazu zawartego w muzyce, tekście , grafice i światłach mogła doświadczać w pełni naszych występów.

[EN] Did you imagine ever putting words to it?
[PL] Czy planowaliście kiedyś do Waszych kompozycji dodać teksty?
[EN] Of course we do, so we tried our hand at cooperation with a few vocalists. However, it turned out that there is not enough space for the vocals, at least not in that debut album. Nevertheless, I can let it on the secret that we’re thinking about making the track with vocals, keeping our characteristic tone and style.
[PL] Oczywiście, nawet podejmowaliśmy próby współpracy z różnymi wokalami. Jakkolwiek, sprawy przyjęły taki obrót, że ostatecznie nie ma u nas przestrzeni potrzebnej do partii wokalnych, już na pewno nie na debiucie. Planujemy jednak nagranie singla z wokalem, pozostającym jednak w naszym stylu, klimacie i brzmieniu.
[EN] How about you learning from other bands that you share stages with? What do you hope to learn from other artists you meet on the road?
[PL] A jeśli chodzi o naukę od innych muzyków, z którymi dzielicie sceny? Czego spodziewacie się, że możecie wyciągnąć od artystów, których spotykacie w trasie?
[EN] All bands we have already met sharing the stage, taught us really much. From a mental preparation – to stay focused and relaxed at the same time, during last seconds before concert. As well as tour discipline and organization related to everything what have to be done before the final show. Besides that, listening and watching other bands live, really helps to precise own sound and appearance, it allows also to see subtle features or solutions that make a performance more professional. What it is more, spending time with other musicians lets to soak through with their style and thinking, what brings interesting confrontations of different views.
[PL] Zespoły, który poznajemy na trasie uczą nas przede wszystkim mentalnego przygotowania do koncertu – znalezienia czas na odpoczynek i skupienie przed wyjściem na scenę. Poznanie organizacji koncertowej innych bandów jest dla nas także pomocne w prowadzeniu własnej działalności w tym zakresie. Ponadto różnorodność i jakość brzmienia różnych bandów na żywo pozwala dookreślić swoje brzmienia, a oprócz tego trasa pozwala podejrzeć rozwiązania pomocne w profesjonalizacji koncertów. Trzeba dodać, że przebywanie z innymi muzykami pozwala przesiąknąć ich stylem i myśleniem, co pozwala na konfrontacje różnych poglądów na kompozycje i aranżację.

[EN] Ok guys, so let’s dive a bit deeper into the meaning of your work. Please explain the idea behind the “underfate” and our ability to put wind in our lives’ sails through it.
[PL] Ok, wejdźmy zatem nieco głębiej w Waszą twórczość i jej znaczenie. Powiedzcie coś więcej o pomyśle na „underfate” i korzystaniu z przeznaczenia celem tchnięcia w żagle naszego życia.
[EN] ‘Underfate’ means some fine and subtle component of the fate. We think, that it is possible to influence it and finally the fate as well. Details of that how we called our band ‘Underfate’ would require another interview, but generally things that happened and at first glance had seemed random, brought us to specific moment, we are. Main and common idea was to compose and play unconventional music. Along with the time, assumed concept had formed and became something we call post-progressive rock.
[PL] ‘Underfate’ oznacza pewną drobną i delikatną składową przeznaczenia, na którą mamy wpływ i przez, którą możemy wpływać na to, co teoretycznie jest już zapisane – przeznaczone. Szczegóły historii nazwy wymagałyby kolejnego wywiadu. Ujmując jednak rzecz w skrócie: rzeczy dziejące się przypadkowo, nie mające znaczenia na pierwszy rzut oka, doprowadziły nas do momentu, w którym jesteśmy. Wspólnym głównym założeniem było komponowanie niekonwencjonalnej muzyki. Z upływem czasu koncept i forma stały się czymś, co nazwaliśmy post-progresywnym rockiem.
[EN] How about Mercury boy and his friend Judith? Who is he and what’s his story?
[PL] A jeśli chodzi o Mercury’ego i Judith? Kim jest ten chłopiec i jaka jest jego historia?
[EN] Mercury and Judith are fictional characters, created for the purpose of the story. Mercury is 21 years old boy that wakes up after 14 years of coma – he is lost, usually cannot distinguish the reality and the dream. Judith is partially the character from Mercury’s dreams, but also a girl that was his best friend in the childhood.
[PL] Mercury i Judith to osoby wymyślone na potrzeby historii, które mialy posłużyc jako nośnik pewnych treści. Mercury to chłopiec budzący się po 14 latach śpiączki – postać zagubiona w rzeczywistości, nieodróżniająca czasami snu i realności. Judith to postać z jego snu, ale tez dziewczynka, z która widywał się w dzieciństwie.
[EN] What about this story resonated with you personally?
[PL] Co w tej historii urzekło i tknęło Was najbardziej?
[EN] Besides these two young characters the story is about world’s ambiguity, mixing of divergent realities and feelings. What’s more, the music of the Seven is composed in such way that allows to dive into the story really deeply. With that untypical content we are really close personally.
[PL] Oprócz historii tych dwóch postaci jest to opowieść o dwuznaczności świata: rozbieżności rzeczywistości i uczuć. Co więcej, muzyka na albumie ‘Seven’ jest skomponowana tak, by wniknąć w tę historię dogłębnie i z tą treścią personalnie jesteśmy związani bardzo blisko.
[EN] If you could be transported into one scene from that story, which would it be?
[PL] Jeśli moglibyście zostać przeniesieni do jakiejś sceny z tej historii, którą byście wybrali?
[EN] It would be the scene from OOBE definitively. Mercury finally meets Judith and can calmly talk with her during the sunset, but at the same moment he is struggling with a demon which has been following him since he has woken up. Eventually Mercury is losing consciousness.
[PL] Zdecydowanie byłaby to scena z OOBE. Mercury ostatecznie spotyka Judith – wreszcie mogą rozmawiać w spokoju obserwując zachód słońca. Jednocześnie zmaga się on z demonami umysłu, które wloką się za nim od momentu, kiedy się obudził. Ostatecznie Mercury traci świadomość rzeczywistości.
[EN] In order to reveal the true meaning of your art, it would be amazing to see a proper visualization of your stories. Have you thought about releasing some music videos or even a movie with a score by “Seven”?
[PL] Żeby najlepiej zrozumieć Waszą twórczośc, byłoby idealnie zobaczyć wizualizacje tych historii. Myśleliście kiedyś o wydaniu teledysku lub nawet filmu z muzyką z „Seven”?
[EN] Due the one of the most important concerts we’ve played recently, we filmed couple visualizations and used them with a great success. However, we are also considering to make a ‘short movie’ based on the story of the Seven.
[PL] Niedawnymi czasy wykonaliśmy parę wizualizacji historii wykorzystywanych na koncertach, jednakże myślimy o podjęciu projektu filmowego, w ramach którego można byłoby nakręcić krótkometrażowy film wykorzystujący pomysł i treść ‘Seven’.
[EN[ Great! Ok guys, what else? What are you working on now?
[PL] Świetnie! Ok Panowie, co więcej? Nad czym teraz pracujecie?
[EN] At the moment we are working on the new visualizations, promotion and how to improve live performances. During trials, in free time, mainly collecting new ideas. Maybe in the autumn we will hit the studio, but just maybe ;)
[PL] Aktualnie pracujemy nad owymi wizulkami, promocją oraz nad tym, jak przygotować jesienną trasę. W przerwach myślimy o nowych kompozycjach, zbierając pomysły, których naprawdę nam nie brakuje. Może uda nam się wejść do studia nadchodzącej jesieni.
