Intriguing weirdness – an interview with MASZYNY I MOTYLE

MASZYNY I MOTYLE are surely one of the greatest musical adventures in the world of bizarre, underrated, and simply brilliant recordings in recent history of experimental, noisy music. After joining the ranks of other interesting musicians on the recent “The Landscape After The Flood” compilation, IDIOTEQ and Post Rock PL collective felt that it’s hight time to give them more space and drop a proper introduction to their art. The guitar/bass trio coupled with some electronics and noisy, psychodelic soundscapes released an impressive album in late 2014. “Panoptikon” can be a really strange listen to get through, but it’s worth trying. If you aren’t left at least delicately affected by their work, then I would honestly be surprised.

MASZYNY I MOTLYE released their debut demo „Ex Anty Futura” in 2008 and their long-awaited debut full length album „Panoptikon” in December 2014.

[EN] Hey guys! It’s really great to finally have a chance to catch up with you and your projects. How are you? How’s spring treating one of the weirdest Polish experimental bands?

[PL] Cześć Panowie! Bardzo miło mi Was w końcu złapać! Co słychać? Jak wiosna traktuje jedną z „dziwniejszych”, eksperymentalnych kapel w Polsce?

[EN] Hi! Thanks for the invitation to the interview. This is very hardworking spring for us. We started with concerts to promote our debut album. The album was recorded a long time and I could hardly wait to play gigs. But you had to be well prepared. We spent a lot of time on rehearsals and editing a special movie, which is synchronized with our music. The movie is an important part of MiM performances.

[PL] Cześć! Dzięki za zaproszenie do wywiadu. U nas wiosna bardzo pracowita. Ruszyliśmy z koncertami promującymi nasz debiutancki album. Płytę nagrywaliśmy długo i już od dawna tęskniłem za graniem na żywo. Ale trzeba było się do tego dobrze przygotować. Stąd kupę czasu zajęły nam próby i montaż specjalnego, spasowanego z muzyką filmu. Film jest ważną częścią występów MiM.

[EN] Wow, sounds amazing! But let’s go back to the very beginning of your story. How did you get involved with experimental music in the first place? Do you remember your rookie days? Tell us more about your background and experience in the field of unearthly music.

[PL] Wow, brzmi super! Ok, ale wróćmy do początku Waszej historii. Jak wkręciliście się w muzykę eksperymentalną? Pamiętacie Wasze pierwsze kroki? Powiedzcie coś więcej o Waszym doświadczeniu.

[EN] The band has some changes behind. Everything keeps changing. And I still consider myself a rookie. We started as a common rock band. Maybe sometimes we played less common rhythms. We parted ways with our drummer and it wasn’t easy. It took a while before we got used to a drum machine. Then we decided to play without a vocalist, and again we had to change our habits. Now our machine is a lot braver than before. Perhaps it is because we have a little naive assumption: we try not to play things that we have heard.

[PL] Zespół przeszedł kilka zmian. Ciągle się coś zmienia. No i ciągle uważam się za początkującego. A zaczynaliśmy jako typowy skład rockowy. Może trochę nas ciągnęło do mniej typowych rytmów. Rozstaliśmy się z bębniarzem i nie było łatwo. Trochę trwało, zanim uwierzyliśmy w automat perkusyjny. Potem zostaliśmy bez wokalisty i znów trzeba było zmienić przyzwyczajenia. Teraz automat jest u nas sporo odważniejszy niż dawniej. To może przez nasze trochę naiwne założenie, żeby nie grać rzeczy, które już słyszeliśmy.

[EN] Looking back across these years and having just released your impressive “Panoptikon” full length, how does it feel like? Are you happy with the reception the band got?

[PL] Patrząc wstecz i mając za sobą niedawną premiere Waszego albumu “Panoptikon”, jak się czujecie? Jesteście zadowoleni z odzewu jaki otrzymaliście?

[EN] “Panoptikon” is a summary of several years of our playing. For me it’s a great lesson that we can use to make and record new material. We are testing “Panoptikon” on gigs. Our guitars on the album doesn’t always sound like a guitar. L ive we play the guitar sound of Formula 1 engines or windshield wipers. I think the concerts are a chance for greater energy than on the album. I am aware that our music is not the easiest, but the album has met very positive reception. Reviewers write: “weird but intriguing”.

[PL] Płyta Panoptikon to podsumowanie kilku lat grania MiM. Dla mnie to też ogromna nauka, która przyda się przy robieniu i nagrywaniu nowego materiału. Panoptikon testujemy już na koncertach. Na płycie gitara nie zawsze brzmi jak gitara. Na żywo gramy gitarowe silniki bolidów czy odgłos wycieraczek samochodu. Myślę, że na koncertach jest szansa na większą energię niż na płycie. Mam świadomość, że nie gramy muzyki najłatwiejszej, ale odbiór płyty jest bardzo pozytywny. W recenzjach czytam: “dziwacznie ale intrygująco”.

[EN] What were your goals while creating “Panoptikon”? How challenging was the process?

[PL] Jakie mieliście cele podczas tworzenia “Panoptikonu”? Jak wymagający był ten proces twórczy?

[EN] We try not to repeat, so the songs are created in different ways. In “Wyścig” (Race) first we laid the story of Formula 1. Then we tried to play warming up the tires, the entrance to the pit-stop or anthem at the end of the race. But things often happen by accident. We started “REC” with a custom guitar sound. Then we were looking for rhythm, we added single words and nothing was planned. Also subject matter of the album had an impact on the shape of tracks. The title refers to the concept of the ideal prison. Since it’s difficult to control prisoners 24 hours a day, perhaps it’s better to arouse in them a sense that they are constantly being watched. Today it’s much easier technically than ever. Internet, cell phones, surveillance cameras, databases – the album doesn’t avoid the sounds typically associated with these technologies. We show this theme more fully on our gigs. We play tracks from the album and show specially edited movie about surveillance society.

[PL] Próbujemy się nie powtarzać, więc utwory powstają w różny sposób. W “Wyścigu” najpierw ułożyliśmy historię o Formule 1. Potem spróbowaliśmy zagrać rozgrzewanie opon, wjazd do pitstopu czy hymn przy wręczaniu medali. Ale często rządzi przypadek. “REC” zaczęliśmy od niestandardowego brzmienia gitary. Potem szukaliśmy rytmu, dodaliśmy pojedyncze słowa i nic nie planowaliśmy. Na kształt utworów miała też wpływ tematyka płyty. Tytuł dotyczy dawnej koncepcji idealnego więzienia. Skoro trudno jest 24 godziny na dobę kontrolować więźniów, może lepiej wzbudzić w nich poczucie, że są ciągle obserwowani. Obecnie jest to dużo łatwiejsze technicznie niż kiedyś. Internet, telefony komórkowe, kamery monitoringu, bazy danych – na płycie nie unikaliśmy odgłosów kojarzących się z tymi technologiami. Pełniej tę tematykę pokazujemy na koncertach. Gramy materiał z płyty mając za plecami specjalnie zmontowany film dotyczący społeczeństwa nadzorowanego.

[EN] Wow, sounds amazing! Could you describe what it means to you to assume the role of an experimentalists and innovators? How do you approach that idea of being avant-garde musicians, exploring new niches and trying to reinvent musical forms. Are you such a band?

[PL] Świetnie! Co oznacza dla Was niejako obejmowanie roli innowatorów i eksperymentatorów? Jak podchodzicie do idei bycia zespołem awangardowym, idącym pod prąd i starającym się odkrywać nowe nisze, często redefiniujące zastane formy? Jesteście takim zespołem?

[EN] You have already mentioned about experimental music. I was trying to avoid answering, but ok, I think I can’t do this all the time. For some time I am discovering contemporary music. Often I do not understand it, but I’m intrigued. Perhaps the word “experiment” can fit to this kind of music? We are just trying not to imitate anyone, but this is not always easy.

[PL] Już wcześniej wspomniałeś o muzyce eksperymentalnej. Trochę chciałem się wykręcić od odpowiedzi, ale chyba mi się nie uda. Od jakiegoś czasu odkrywam muzykę współczesną. Często nic nie rozumiem, ale mnie intryguje. Może tu pasuje słowo “eksperyment”? My tylko staramy się nikogo nie naśladować, ale nie zawsze jest to łatwe.

[EN] Haha, ok then, fair enough :) So what are your main influences in 2015? How have they evolved? Tell me more about works and artists that surprise you and make you think.

[PL] Hehe, ok, niech będzie :) Jakie inspiracje dają Wam największy impuls w tym roku? Jak Wasze weny ewoluowały przez ostatnie lata? Powiedzcie coś o artystachb i dziełach, które zaskakują Was i skłaniają do myślenia.

[EN] Instead of giving the names of bands, I can say that movies work hard on me. Especially festival New Horizons in Wroclaw. In the main competition there are original, breaking schemes movies. They are not always easy and pleasant, but it’s hard to forget them. For example “Decasia” with music by Michael Gordon is on my mind for years and still surprises me. Usually I come back from the festival a little “spoiled”. Very picky. Typically, a lot of my musical ideas then goes into the trash.

[PL] Zamiast podać nazwy zespołów, odpowiem, że mocno na mnie działają filmy. Szczególnie festiwal Nowe Horyzonty we Wrocławiu. Do głównego konkursu trafiają tam filmy oryginalne, przełamujące schematy. Nie zawsze łatwe i przyjemne, ale nie dające o sobie zapomnieć. Taka “Decasia” z muzyką Michaela Gordona siedzi mi w głowie od lat i wciąż mnie zaskakuje. Z festiwalu wracam trochę “popsuty”. Bardzo wybredny. Zazwyczaj sporo moich pomysłów muzycznych trafia wtedy do kosza.

[EN] Have you ever thought about releasing a movie score or a movie related project like a live performance in a theater, etc.?

[PL] Myśleliście kiedyś o wydaniu ścieżki dźwiękowej, albo zrealizowaniu projektu z Waszym występem na żywo w kinie lub teatrze?

[EN] Our friends talked us into releasing a live DVD of the gig played to the movie. However, all this takes time, and we wanted to have debut behind. And now we are testing a new movie at gigs and maybe we will get back to the idea.

[PL] Znajomi namawiali nas kiedyś do wydania DVD z koncertem granym na żywo do filmu. Wszystko jednak wymaga czasu, a my chcieliśmy mieć już debiut za sobą. A teraz testujemy na koncertach nowy film i być może wrócimy do pomysłu.

[EN] Can you tell our international readers a bit about what’s currently happening with the independent music scene in Poland? How would you comment on its current state and what other bands in the vein of MiM and similar noisy stuff would you recommend for all the explorers out there? :)

[PL] Możecie powiedzieć naszym zagranicznym czytelnikom co ciekawego słychać w naszej krajowej scenie muzyki niezależnej? Jak byście ocenili jej obecny stan i jakich artystów podobnych do MiM polecilibyście wymagającym eksploratorom zza granicy? :)

[EN] I would recommend Requiem Records. Especially Archive Series project. The label reissue or release for the first time Polish independent records from years ago. Great music and unique graphic designs. Eg. on RIGOR MORTISS album you can find music from the old cassette, never before released tracks, videoclips and DVD with the old concerts. The whole is in a welding glove with the band logo. By the way, the band was reactivated, playing gigs and is preparing new material. Similarly KINSKY – I saw their gigs years ago. And I have recently seen the first gig after the band reactivation: awesome show. In my opinion, a lot of good is happening also in Polish independent labels, including Instant Classic and Antena Krzyku. MERKABAH, STARA RZEKA or full of energy and noise MARTIM MONITZ and [PERU]. Also, I often listen to SEMANTIK PUNK and THE KURWS. And yet LIŚCIE and JÓZEF OST: less known but very intriguing bands.

[PL] Polecam wytwórnię Requiem Records. Szczególnie linię wydawniczą Archive Series. To wznowienia lub pierwsze wydania nagrań polskiej sceny niezależnej sprzed lat. Świetna muzyka w unikatowej oprawie. Np. płyta RIGOR MORTISS zawiera odświeżone nagrania z historycznej kasety zespołu. Do tego utwory nigdzie wcześniej nie wydane, teledyski i DVD ze starymi koncertami. Całość ubrana w rękawicę spawalniczą z logo zespołu. Swoją drogą grupa się reaktywowała, gra koncerty i szykuje nowy materiał. Podobnie KINSKY – widziałem ich na koncertach lata temu. Byłem też niedawno na pierwszym występie po reaktywacji: niesamowite widowisko. Moim zdaniem dużo dobrego dzieje się też w niezależnych polskich wytwórniach, między innymi Instant Classic czy Antenie Krzyku. Choćby MERKABAH, STARA RZEKA czy energetycznie hałasujące MARTIM MONITZ i [PERU]. Poza tym wracam często do SEMANTIK PUNK i THE KURWS. I jeszcze dorzucę mniej może znane, ale bardzo mnie intrygujące LIŚCIE i JÓZEF OST.

[EN] What is the network and what are the conditions for these bands in your area or other Polish cities you like to travel to? Are there a lot of venues that are worth checking out and a bunch of people keeping it all up for young artists?

[PL] Jak wygląda sieć powiązań między zespołami w Waszej okolicy i w miastach, w których bywacie? Czy jest dużo ciekawych miejsc i ludzi wspierających młodych artystów?

[EN] I think I can answer it after playing a few gigs. Three years ago, before our break there were many great places to play. Now I follow the actions of my friends from other bands. They are playing a lot of gigs and I am full of optimism.

[PL] Myślę, że uczciwie będę mógł odpowiedzieć dopiero po zagraniu paru koncertów. Trzy lata temu przed nasza przerwą w graniu działało wiele świetnych miejsc, do których chętnie wracaliśmy. Teraz śledzę działania znajomych z innych kapel, które sporo koncertują i jestem pełen optymizmu.

[EN] I guess that live shows are one of the best ways to learn new things, that can spark new ideas like no other element of being a band. Considering your last answer, you don’t seem to be a heavy touring pack, do you? Tell me a bit about your past live experiences and your future plans regarding that matter.

[PL] Wydaje się, że koncertowanie jest jedną z najlepszych form odkrywania inspiracji, również dla samych zespołów. Biorąc pod uwagę Waszą ostatnią odpowiedź, nie jesteście intensywnie koncertującym zespołem, prawda? Powiedzcie coś więcej o Waszych doświadczeniu jeśli chodzi o występy na żywo i Waszych przyszłych planach w tej materii.

[EN] We played a lot of gigs before the recording of Panoptikon. We were in the Neuro Music Contest final as (part of Asymmetry Festival). We played with JARBOE, NACHTMYSTIUM, MOJA ADRENALINA and MOANAA. I am pleased that we were able to share the stage with bands from various music genres and to meet with the positive reception of our sounds. For example, we played with KWOON, SEARCHING FOR CALM, NIEMATOTAMTO, but also with HATI, MERKABAH, ARRM, or MAZZOL INFORMATION. Recently we have played the first gig after the break. We are going to visit a few places in Poland. We are setting details, we will inform you on our website. We play the next gig 01.08 with RIGOR MORTISS in Ciechanów.

[PL] Graliśmy trochę koncertów nim weszliśmy do studia z materiałem na Panoptikon. Byliśmy w finale Neuro Music Contest w ramach Asymmetry Festival. Wystąpiliśmy obok JARBOE, NACHTMYSTIUM czy MOJEJ ADRENALINY i MOANAA. Cieszy mnie, że udało nam się dzielić scenę z zespołami z różnych gatunków muzycznych i spotykać się z pozytywnym odbiorem naszych dźwięków. Na przykład graliśmy z KWOON, SEARCHING FOR CALM, NIEMATOTAMTO, ale też z HATI, MERKABAH, ARRM czy MAZZOL INFORMATION. Obecnie jesteśmy świeżo po pierwszym koncercie po przerwie. [EN] Ok, so lastly, how do you envision the future musical endeavors of MASZYNY I MOTYLE? Do you have a long term mission or a goal for the band?

[PL] Ok, na koniec, jak przewidujecie rozwój Waszego projektu? Macie długoterminowy plan i misję dla MASZYN I MOTYLI?

[EN] Panopticon is for me a good start for further action. Album release took longer than planned. In preparation for the gigs, we decided to change the band members. We got polite, but rather cool response from labels. Eventually the album is self-released. Now I think that these difficulties can help us in the future. I feel that many things can go smoothly. And now we are starting things, that I really like: gigs and work on new material.

[PL] Dla mnie Panoptikon to dobry start do dalszych działań. Wydanie płyty trwało dłużej, niż planowaliśmy. W trakcie przygotowań do koncertów zdecydowaliśmy o zmianie składu. Mieliśmy grzeczny, ale raczej chłodny odzew od wydawców. Ostatecznie płytę wydaliśmy sami. Teraz myślę, że te utrudnienia dobrze nam zrobiły na przyszłość. Czuję, że wiele rzeczy może pójść sprawniej. A na razie przed nami to, co bardzo lubię: koncerty i praca nad nowym materiałem.
