Lync continues their streak of unexpected returns with another split 7”, this time joining forces with Julia & The Squeezettes for a reworking of “Cue Cards.” Out February 14, 2025, via Suicide Squeeze Records, the release follows their collaboration with David Bazan last year, which featured a reissue of Lync’s “B” alongside Bazan’s reinterpretation.
This new split builds on that idea of revisiting the past through a contemporary lens.
Julia & The Squeezettes—a project led by Julia Kugel (The Coathangers, Julia, Julia) and rounded out by Staz Lindes (The Paranoyds), Bonnie Bloomgarden (Death Valley Girls), and Rikki Styxx (The Two Tens)—delivers a take on “Cue Cards” that keeps Lync’s raw, rain-soaked intensity intact but drapes it in an eerie, spectral glow. The track retains the energy of the 1994 original, but there’s a ghostly shimmer in the vocal harmonies that tilts the song into a different atmosphere—like staring at a familiar reflection through a fogged-up window.
Kugel describes the recording process as completely unplanned: “We created the cover one afternoon in our home studio. No rehearsals and no preconceptions! It’s truly a snapshot of the gathering of souls that day. Our version of the song came together naturally and spontaneously. I love the raw energy of the original and I think we captured a bit of that but were able to put our own spin on it. The goal was to highlight everyone’s individuality. I loved working, creating & hanging with these talented humans! Grateful for the trust of Lync & Suicide Squeeze to work on this project.”
For Lync’s James Bertram, this collaboration extends the idea of bridging eras, much like their previous split with Bazan. “On the heels of Pedro the Lion’s stripped down cover of ‘B,’ a supergroup of talented folks, brought together for this recording by Julia of The Coathangers, and featuring Staz Lindes of The Paranoyds, Bonnie Bloomgarden of Death Valley Girls, and Rikki Styxx of The Two Tens, has produced a wonderful surprise rendition of the track ‘Cue Cards’ off of These Are Not Fall Colors. Bringing past and present together once again, it’s such a pleasure to share another split 7” released by the mighty Suicide Squeeze!”
The pairing makes sense—Lync’s rough-edged, emotionally immediate style has always attracted musicians who favor instinct over polish. Their influence on a certain strain of DIY punk is evident in the members of The Squeezettes, who each bring their own background in scrappy, offbeat rock. The result is a version of “Cue Cards” that feels both reverent and unbound by nostalgia. The past is still alive, but it’s moving forward.
