PRIMATE MATRIARCA’s raw stoner metal sound with a prehistoric edge

Alicante’s arid landscapes and rugged mountains have given rise to a raw and powerful sound of PRIMATE MATRIARCA.

Formed in 2023 by Joan Lorenzo and Tristán Rico, this stoner metal duo has played together in various bands since their adolescence, moved to the small mountain town of Onil. What began as an experiment in heavy, simple riffs quickly evolved into a full-fledged project.

Tristán, who only started learning drums three years ago, pairs his raw, instinctive drumming with Joan’s aggressive guitar riffs, after Joan swapped his bass for the guitar. Their sound, though simple in intention, is driven by influences that span across the genre: from the sludge of MELVINS to the cosmic trippiness of SLIFT, from the raw power of ROLLINS BAND to the immortal legacy of BLACK SABBATH.

Their debut EP, Pleistoceno, dropped only six months after their first rehearsal. This home-recorded, four-song collection represents the heart of PRIMATE MATRIARCA’s concept. Each track is rooted in prehistory, a space where the duo imagines the lives of our distant ancestors. Through heavy grooves and raw, earthy tones, they explore what it might have been like to live in those ancient times, crafting a raw narrative of survival, struggle, and primal existence.

The follow-up to Pleistoceno is a five-song live session entitled Equinoccio, recorded during the 2024 equinox and released on YouTube.

They are already working on their next set of songs, determined to improve upon the home recording process that shaped Pleistoceno.

They also plan to record Equinoccio again in a professional studio, aiming to elevate the raw sound of their live performance into something even more polished.

Their dream is to become regulars in the underground circuits that keep Spain’s stoner and metal scenes alive, playing intimate shows for local communities that embrace this dirty, heavy sound.

A particularly ambitious goal for them would be to land a slot at Portugal’s Sonic Blast Festival.

PRIMATE MATRIARCA has compiled a list of underground bands that have left an impact on their own music:

Santo Rostro:

“A blend of psychedelia and stoner, their sound has it all—shredded vocals, heavy riffs, and thrilling solos.

Firebreather:

Their raw, heavy sound feels like a jet engine about to take off. Their album Dwell in the Fog was a key influence for us from the first listen.

Luna Vieja:

A doom and stoner coven in its heaviest and most monumental form. Their stage presence is also spectacular!

Viaje a 800:

A cult band in Spain, combining Andalusian rock with stoner vibes.

Pionera:

Three top-tier musicians making incredible songs that blend elements of hardcore and metal.
