PELICAN interviewed by GuitarJunkie

February 20, 2012

GuitarJunkie conducted an interview with PELICAN.

What are your main guitars? Any custom mods done to them? What are the stand out pros and cons (if any) to your guitars.

Trevor de Brauw (guitar): I have always stuck to my trusty Gibson SG. It’s from the 70’s, but from that period of time when Gibson were somewhat erratic about their serial numbers, and therefore I haven’t had any luck figuring out specifically when it was made, though it was sold to me as a ’72. I think the tone of the 70s SGs is unparalleled, really bitey and can handle high gain without losing control over feedback. It’s also light enough that it feels a bit like an extension of my body when I’m playing. The only drawback I’ve had with it these years is chasing my dream clean tone; it lends itself to distortion and I’ve never been fully happy with the sort of honky qualities that come about when I’m trying to do cleaner parts. I’m happy with it for live applications, but when it comes time to record I sometimes have to fallback on a backup, like my Fender Jaguar (a cheap 90’s Mexican-made model, since you ask – not a great guitar by any means, but appropriate in the right context).
