French instrumental duo The Shadow’s Gone Out, based in Tours, has announced the release of a vinyl compilation, John Doe, through Pogo Records. The record, available since October 18, combines their previous EPs—Final Alarm (2022) and John Doe (2024)—along with their single, Whispering Ghost (2023). Additionally, an audio tape version has been made available by Bitume Production.
Formed in 2020, the band consists of Julien Nourtier (drums, samples) and Anthony Enault (bass). Their approach excludes traditional lead instruments, instead focusing on rhythm sections infused with industrial samples. The band cites influences from Anglo-Saxon underground scenes and American metal, which shape their sound.
The band’s John Doe EP introduces heavier tempos and a more metal-inspired direction compared to their earlier work.
The duo has emphasized that the music reflects the urgency of contemporary life, incorporating elements like sirens and industrial noise to illustrate this perspective.
The accompanying cover art, which depicts slices of a brain, aligns with the record’s thematic focus on losing autonomy and disengaging from reflective thought.
The compilation brings together several phases of their work. Final Alarm laid the groundwork with its rock-influenced rhythm and electro samples, while John Doe expands on these ideas, introducing more aggressive tones, including the use of double bass pedals.
Known for integrating visuals into their live performances, The Shadow’s Gone Out creates video clips that are broadcast during concerts. This visual component aims to complement the industrial atmosphere of their music, adding another layer of immersion to their performances.
Put these guys on your radar if you’re into instrumental rock that won’t put you to sleep.
