Alt emo duo WAKE UP SPACEBOY premiere new video for their track “Jolly Ranchers and Licorice”

2 mins read

Now this is fun. Hot out of the Southern Florida rooftops come the cutely named WAKE UP SPACEBOY, who fit so much into our interest in sad emo in the vein of UK’s NAI HARVEST and numerous lo-fi bands from the States. Mike and Diego have recently released their debut EP and are heading to Austin, TX in one week to play at a SXSW showcase featuring other great bands like MOM JEANS, WORST PARTY EVER, STRANGER RANGER, and more amazing acts. The Coral Gables based duo have teamed up with us to unleash their first DIY music video for the song “Jolly Ranchers and Licorice”, available for streaming below! Feel their unpretentious honesty and sheer enjoyment and leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Michael Williams commented on both the band and the new song/video:

Our band Wake Up Spaceboy from Coral Gables, Florida started this past year as myself and drummer Diego Glascock fooling around in a dorm room. We are still a two-piece band now but have found space and time to practice more at a house off campus. At the end of 2016, we released our first self titled EP, only 8 minutes long total.
The second song off the EP “jolly ranchers and licorice” was written about hot boxing with friends after class in the school parking lot. In the song, I compare these habits in college of smoking and binge drinking to my habits as a kid of binge-eating candy, which is where the name of the song comes from.
In the video itself, we aimed to convey this by replacing cigarettes and alcohol with sour patch kids. For this video, we ordered 5 pounds of Sour Patch Kids off Amazon and shot a bunch of scenes with us eating and messing around on the top floor of the campus parking garage. I want to emphasize how accurate we aimed to be while making this video, as the shown parking lot is the exact same parking lot we would hotbox in real life.

Lyrics:

Friday night and I’m out again, slurring words and stumbling, drinking at a friend’s house
Got a text asking “How you been?”: extremely high and drunk again, hoping you don’t find out
Well there’s something in the way it is, it makes me think, it makes me feel maybe that I’m missing something
Passing papers in my buddy’s car and with the windows up and the music on, I’m asking what it means to me

Smoking in the parking lot, do you think they could see us laughing?
My friends care for me like I care for them
Constant living in this state of post-anxiety
Sitting in the backseat and I swear that they could see us laughing

Space is feeling down again, he’s missing class and sleeping in, we’re yelling at him “WAKE UP”
My hair is getting long again, I’m yelling “THANK YOU GOD” I want the opposite of a haircut.
Growing up in the decadence, counting Jolly Ranchers and licorice on the floor
Is it wrong I feel like a kid, and it was fine right now and fine back then, I guess it’s what we’re living for

Smoking in the parking lot, do you think they could see us laughing?
My friends care for me like I care for them
Constant living in this state of post-anxiety
Sitting in the backseat and I swear that they could see us laughing
