Seattle’s relentless rain and shadowy winters might seem bleak, but they’re the perfect backdrop for “Dear Gods“, the debut full-length from YELLFIRE, now streaming in its entirety.
This hardcore/noise-rock quartet channels the city’s storied legacy of cathartic heaviness—think early grunge meeting its angrier, sludgier descendants—into a record that crushes with weight yet demands repeat spins.
Out today via The Ghost Is Clear Records, “Dear Gods” captures the unfiltered energy of Jerome Sauer (vocals, guitars), Eric Christiansen (guitars), Casey Nolan (bass), and Trent McIntyre (drums).
“Dear Gods” was recorded at The Unknown in Anacortes, WA by Jason Sissoyev, with additional tracking by Derek Moree at The Boiler Room in Seattle. Mixed by Matt Bayles (Botch, ISIS, Minus the Bear, Mastodon) and mastered by Magnus Lindberg (Cult of Luna, Birds in Row). It’s steeped in a sound that owes as much to the Emerald City’s post-hardcore scene as it does to the grit of life under gray skies.
The album features a host of heavy hitters from Seattle’s music underground: John Pettibone (HEIRESS, HIMSA) roars on the opener “Into Fire,” Demian Johnston (GREAT FALLS) cuts through on “Escape,” and Nouela Johnston lends haunting vocals on “Cynic’s Revision,” where Matt Bayles also adds keys. The closer “Red Sky” erupts with Ben Verellen’s (HELMS ALEE, HARKONEN) guttural power.
What a thick riffed monster. Be sure to check it out!
