DEPRESSION NAP channel five years of grief into a blackened, psychotic double-video premiere

2 mins read

Depression Nap didn’t build a fancy website website. They barely have social media. Two shows deep and already sounding like they’ve been festering for years โ€” which, in a way, they have. The project grew out of half a decade of loneliness and grief, shaped into something that sits somewhere between screamo, noise rock, and black metal without pledging allegiance to any of them.

Now they’re premiering “Your Beauty Is a Broken Mirror Reflection” / “Corpse Dysmorphia” as one continuous black-and-white video, and the whole thing hits like a waking nightmare scored by people who stopped sleeping.

Matt, the person behind Depression Nap, describes the project plainly: “This band is the result of dealing with loneliness and grief from over the past five years or so.” No grand artistic thesis, no reinvention narrative. Just accumulated damage looking for a frequency.

The two tracks are paired in a single visual piece โ€” shot in black and white with what Matt calls “this A24 film style.” When asked why the songs needed to stay together rather than exist as separate releases, the answer was straightforward: they’re both from an upcoming EP, and the visual treatment ties them into one experience. Separating them would break the logic.

Sonically, this is a nasty intersection โ€” blackened hardcore crashing into screamo and post-hardcore, dragged through layers of murderous psych noise that sticks in your skull long after it stops. It’s not genre tourism. It’s someone pulling from two years of deep obsession with abrasive music and letting all of it bleed together without filtering.

Depression Nap operates as a calculated experiment in staying small. “Almost an experiment in the realm of DIY music,” Matt says. “Not trying to have our music on much streaming and just keeping our social media presence bare bones.”

There’s no push for algorithmic visibility, no playlist pitching. The whole thing exists at arm’s length from the industry, which makes it feel more honest than most stuff trying harder to look honest.

As for where the band fits locally โ€” they don’t know yet, and they’re fine with that. They’ve played two shows and gotten a strong response, which Matt takes as a good sign. No scene-positioning, no networking strategy. Just showing up and seeing what happens.

When asked what he doesn’t want people to take away from the project, Matt flipped the question: “At this point I feel like if anyone takes anything from this band, I made an impression. Which makes me content that I am doing music in an honest and artistic way.” That’s not false modesty โ€” it’s the kind of statement that only makes sense when someone genuinely built something for themselves first and is just now opening the door a crack.

The “Your Beauty Is a Broken Mirror Reflection” / “Corpse Dysmorphia” video drops with the upcoming EP. Keep an eye on their Bandcamp โ€” it might be the only place you’ll find it.
