On the heels of their recently released EP ‘Bury The Bones’, The Northern California post-hardcore outfit DOWN AGAIN has dropped a single version of “The Fire” which features Counterparts vocalist Brendan Murphy. The special edition of the track is available today exclusively on IDIOTEQ and this Friday as a single on Spotify, Apple Music and Youtube.
Comments guitarist / vocalist Lenny Costa: “This is one of our favorite songs we have ever written as a band, “The Fire” has so many different elements and really showcases our versatility as an emo/post-hardcore band. When we were first writing it I was listening to a lot of early Thrice and Emery and I think that really came through on the track with the 2000’s vibe. It also has some of our hardest hitting moments as a band and was incredibly fun to write and record. The song is about realizing some of the lies and manipulation we have experienced growing up in church so it’s very personal and it was important to us that the emotions came through clearly.”
“The best part about the song was definitely getting to work with Brendan Murphy from Counterparts on his feature. He recorded his guest spot from Canada with Vince Soliveri, while we were at Fang Studio in California with Nick Loiacono. His parts really brought the song to a whole different level and it is really cool to have a track with one of our favorite artists on it.”
Down Again pulls heavy influence from early 2000’s post hardcore favorites, which they cite groups like Underoath, Thrice, Defeater and Brand New as their inspiration to pick up instruments and begin their own journeys. This young group, who are also longtime friends, grew up skating, surfing and going to shows together throughout the bay area. Down Again has assembled a new EP and singles that have the energy and songwriting of a veteran group but with the comfort of knowing they are just getting started. ‘Bury the Bones’ and “The Fire” are the follow-ups to their 2020 debut ‘The Devil Is A Gentleman’, which put the band on the map and garnered impressive media coverage from Metal Injection, Outburn, New Noise, Brooklyn Vegan and more.
Down Again had been carefully planning their introduction to the world and released their single “Actions & Their Consequences” May 2020, followed by their debut LP “The Devil is a Gentlemen” in June. These long time trio of friends have spent the last 9 years outdoors skating, surfing and hiking. The music on “The Devil is a Gentlemen” touches on the struggles of questioning faith, loss, infidelity and mental health.
Less than a year later the band released their “Live Acoustic Session” in March 2021 to give those songs a chance to be heard live, raw, and acoustic with shows being canceled due to the pandemic. Down Again draws heavy influence from early 2000’s favorites such as Brand New, Underoath, Thrice, and Manchester Orchestra. The band is rounded out by Lenny Costa (vocals/guitar), Lucas Garcia (vocals/guitar/drums/keys) and Alex Wechter (bass).
