Kali Yuga, the newest vicious offering from atmospheric post metal / post hardcore hybrid SIRENS CHANT is a song about the connection between mankind and its creator. Our need for a beginning and an end. Today, we’re giving you an exclusive airing of the video above.
The video was directed by Luca Broglia (singer of HEARTLAPSE, who offered their amazing craft and music video HERE), and the song was mixed by Philip Odom, who did portroyal of guilt‘s post-production lately.
“The structure of the song and the main riffs were created by Domonkos Farkas (guitar) and Norbert Breszkovics (guitar).” – comments the band’s vocalist Mark Balogh. “We finished it up together through rehearsing (with Zsombor Biró on drums; and Kristóf Faddi on bass). I wrote the lyrics after we had got the song pieced together.”
“We usually do things this way. It’s easier to get motivated by listening to the final musical idea, experience the feelings the guys provide for me. The final production was made by Phillip Odom who also produces Portrayal of Guilt. We thought their sound kinda fits our music too, so Norbert reached out to Phillip via Instagram. It worked like a charm despite it being an intercontinental collaboration. We are really pleased how the song turned out.”
𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑖𝑛 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑐𝑒𝑝𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑙𝑦𝑟𝑖𝑐𝑠 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑖𝑛𝑠𝑝𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑑 𝑏𝑦 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑎 𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑑 𝐵𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑘, 𝑍𝑠𝑜𝑚𝑏𝑜𝑟 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑚𝑒 𝑎𝑟𝑒 ℎ𝑢𝑔𝑒 𝑓𝑎𝑛𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑖𝑡.
“Kentaro Miura (the artist behind Berserk) described God in very unique way.” – continues Mark. “In that high-fantasy world God is created from the collective thoughts, needs and desires of humanity. This resonated with me and how actual this thought is. I find it really profound.”
Kali Yuga tells the story of a God created by mankind in its present.
But what happens, when most of humanity’s thoughts, feelings, desires are dark and disturbed?
“The God would act in the only way it knows: destruction.” – explains Mark. “I mean… we are living in an age where if something doesn’t fit our way of thinking we simply discard it, destroy it, cancel it. The only logical step for this God would be to solve the problem with our own methods. And I think the greatest problem of our existence is ourselves, if I can phrase it this way. We forgot how to search for answers, meaning. We really just stopped thinking. It’s a shoot first, ask questions later era and that is sad and infuriating.”
As for the music video, the band knew they wanted to have something visual for this song, but they couldn’t think of any good ideas. “A year or so ago Luca Broglia told us that he would be really stoked if we could work on something together.” – shares Mark. “So we finally reached out to him and gave him total artistic freedom.”
“So the final product is almost 100% of his ideas and interpretation of our song. Working together was easy. We understood each-other really well as he is a musician too. He directed, handled the camera work and created the entirety of the video by himself. Makeup was created by Bianka Nagy. The shooting took place at Budapest. The video catches the vibe of the song in a naturalistic, kinda tribal way as it was mainly intended. But it can be interpreted in a modern way too. The God being an unregulated AI.”
