Experiencing nature – an interview with FRONDIBUS

13 mins read

Following 3 previous promotional interviews and features on “The Landscape After The Flood“, the latest post rock compilation from Post-Rock PL collective, I am pleased to give you IDIOTEQ’s newest addition to the series, Cracow, Poland’s ambient, progressive post rock band FRONDIBUS. These guys have released their debut LP “Leafage” last year and were so kind to share some of their thoughts on this project, their creative process and the role of nature in their art.ย Ambient,ย instrumental moodย pervading their debut recording is balanced by their metallic edge and dynamic tones andย sees the band giving their best to create their own type of magical aural experience. Listen for yourself and dive into the full video interview andย a transcript below.

[EN] Hey Adam! Whatโ€™s up? Itโ€™s been more than a year since you released your debut album โ€œLeafageโ€. How has the project grown since back then?

[[PL] Czeล›ฤ‡ Adam! Co sล‚ychaฤ‡? Minฤ…ล‚ juลผ ponad rok od premiery Waszego debiutanckiego albumu โ€žLeafageโ€. Jak od tego czasu rozwinฤ…ล‚ siฤ™ Wasz projekt?

[EN] Hey Karol! Yes we recorded our debut album Leafage during our May holidays last year. Thankfully we had an opportunity to spend over a week in a cottage house in Zawoja. We then focused on the recordings that we were doing previously at Jasiek’s place. Since then I’ve been composing songs at home and experimenting with some new ideas while Jasiek has been improving his skills in professional photography. We also released a single which took part in Post-Rock.Pl compilation titled “The Landscape After The Flood” wchich was released in march this year. I was driven by the desire to expand my workshop which pushed me on some journeys. I’ve been to Norway and few months later I moved to Abingdon where we are right now. Jasiek joined me abouth a month ago. And now we are working here, prepare new material. We are still carried by the desire to set up our recording studio and this is what we are working on right now.

[PL]] Siemasz Karol! Tak, nagraliล›my nasz pierwszy album podczas zeszล‚orocznej majรณwki kiedy to mieliล›my okazjฤ™ wyjechaฤ‡ na dziesiฤ™ฤ‡ dni do gรณrskiego domku w Zawoi. Skupiliล›my siฤ™ wtedy na nagraniach materiaล‚u, ktรณry do tamtej pory nagrywaliล›my co pewien czas u Jaล›ka. Od tamtej pory nadal komponowaล‚em i eksperymentowaล‚em z nowymi pomysล‚ami a Jasiek rozwijaล‚ siฤ™ w dziedzinie profesjonalnej fotografii. Wypuล›ciliล›my rรณwnieลผ singiel “The Splitting Prism”, ktรณry znalazล‚ siฤ™ na kompilacji Post-Rock.Pl zatytuowanej “The Landscape After The Flood” wydanej w marcu tego roku. Pragnฤ…c rozbudowaฤ‡ swoje studio odbyล‚em kilka podrรณลผy, byล‚em przez pewien czas w Norwegii a kilka miesiฤ™cy pรณลบniej przeniosล‚em siฤ™ do Abingdon w Anglii w ktรณrym jesteล›my do tej pory. Tutaj pracujemy i przygotowujemy nowy materiaล‚.

Weโ€™ll definitely get to that a bit later, but first off, letโ€™s dig back to the beginning. How did you first get into writing post rock music? What sparked the interest and furthermore, what made you decide to form this band in the first place?

[EN] I would say that the time when I was in high school and I started to play with my first rock band was the beginning of the creating process, i started to compose music and play guitar but I stumbled upon post rock music few years later. It was the time when I was chilling in a beautiful cottage house in Marcyporฤ™ba in moutain and forest surroundings. I then heard an album of If These Trees Could Talk for the first time. I was really moved by it’s spacious sound and gradually evolving power. It was something different than what I was used to listen to. Automatically I started to compose more of that kind of music. I started to play with effect pedals and gather more equipment. We started to play occasionally with Jasiek and few of our friends in a youth centre in Cracow but because of lack of time we decided to play and compose at home and just share the ideas with each other. That was giving us better results because we could then do it whenever we had time for it and didn’t have to stick to a schedule. Two hours of rehearsing per week is just not enough to become good at what we wanted to do. So we were meeting at Jasiek’s place, we were composing and recording until May 2014 when we went to a cottage house in Zawoja. We then focused 100% on our material and as a result we recorded our album. At that moment when our first album was finished we thought that it’s a perfect time to call ourselves a band and share our music with the public.

[PL] Powiedziaล‚bym, ลผe kiedy chodziล‚em jeszcze do liceum i zaczฤ…ล‚em graฤ‡ w moim pierwszym zespole wรณwczas zaczฤ…ล‚em tworzyฤ‡ muzykฤ™ i w ogรณle graฤ‡ na gitarze jednak z muzykฤ… post rockowฤ… zapoznaล‚em siฤ™ kilka lat pรณลบniej. Podczas wypoczynku w piฤ™knym wiejskim domku w Marcyporฤ™bie usล‚yszaล‚em po raz pierwszy album zespoล‚u If These Trees Could Talk. Automatycznie zaczฤ…ล‚em komponowaฤ‡ podobnฤ… muzykฤ™, bawiฤ‡ siฤ™ efektami i zbieraฤ‡ potrzebne sprzฤ™ty. Zaczฤ™liล›my graฤ‡ okazjonalnie z Jaล›kiem i kilkoma naszymi przyjaciรณล‚mi w krakowskim centrum kultury jednak przez niewielkฤ… iloล›ฤ‡ czasu jakฤ… mogliล›my na to poล›wiฤ™ciฤ‡ zdecydowaliล›my siฤ™ graฤ‡ i komponowaฤ‡ w domu i wymieniaฤ‡ siฤ™ nawzajem pomysล‚ami. To dawaล‚o nam duลผo lepsze efekty gdyลผ mogliล›my to robiฤ‡ kiedy tylko mieliล›my na to czas i nie musieliล›my siฤ™ trzymaฤ‡ harmonogramu. Dwie godziny tygodniowo na prรณby to byล‚o stanowczo za maล‚o byล›my mogli dobrze robiฤ‡ to co chcieliล›my. Spotykaliล›my siฤ™ zatem u Jaล›ka komponujฤ…c i nagrywajฤ…c do maja 2014 roku kiedy wyjechaliล›my do domku w Zawoi. Skupiliล›my siฤ™ wรณwczas caล‚kowicie na materiale i w rezultacie nagraliล›my nasz pierwszy album. Wtedy stwierdziliล›my ลผe jest to odpowiedni moment na to by zaistnieฤ‡ juลผ jako zespรณล‚ i udostฤ™pniฤ‡ nasz materiaล‚.

[EN] Was FRONDIBUS meant to be a duo? Tell me more about your plans of adding more musicians to the lineup.

[PL] Czy FRONDIBUS u podstaw miaล‚ byฤ‡ duo?

[EN] No, we didn’t mean to be a duo, I think that it came naturally because we had an opportunity to play with our friends back in Cracow but it didn’t work out, we didn’t have much time for that so we focused more on playing together at home since it was in our common interest, we committed ourselves to do something with the music in the way that we preferred. This is how we bacame a duo. We don’t have any other musicians. We use virtual instruments for everything that we record except guitars which we both play. We definitely want to play as a full band. It would be a bit weird to perform live as a duo. We do have a lot of friendly musicians back in Cracow who would love to join us and play with us however for now it is impossible because we are here in Abingdon, we’re working and saving money our equipment. But we might as well get to know some musicians here and start rehearsing. For now we just want to focus on doing our jobs and composing material for the next album. We will do what we love to do despite anything.

[PL] Nie planowaliล›my istnieฤ‡ jako skล‚ad dwuosobowy, to raczej wyszล‚o naturalnie poniewaลผ mieliล›my wczeล›niej moลผliwoล›ฤ‡ grania z naszymi przyjaciรณล‚mi jednak to nie wypaliล‚o, nie mieliล›my wystarczajฤ…co duลผo czasu by graฤ‡ wspรณlnie wiฤ™c skupiliล›my siฤ™ bardziej na graniu we dwรณjkฤ™ w domu gdyลผ oboje byliล›my tym pochล‚oniฤ™ci, poล›wiฤ™ciliล›my siฤ™ pracy z muzykฤ… w sposรณb, ktรณry nam najbardziej odpowiadaล‚. Tak zostaliล›my duetem. Nie mamy w skล‚adzie innych muzykรณw. Uลผywamy do wszystkich naszych nagraล„ instrumentรณw wirtualnych z wyjฤ…tkiem gitar na ktรณrych oboje gramy. Bardzo chcemy graฤ‡ w peล‚nym skล‚adzie. Byล‚oby trochฤ™ dziwnie wystฤ™powaฤ‡ na ลผywo jako duet. Moลผemy jednak poznaฤ‡ tutaj jakichล› muzykรณw i zaczฤ…ฤ‡ graฤ‡ prรณby.

[EN] Youโ€™re both very young. How do you see your future musical development at this point? Would you like the music and live performance to become your main occupation?

Chcielibyล›cie, ลผeby tworzenie muzyki i koncertowanie staล‚o siฤ™ Waszym gล‚รณwnym zajฤ™ciem?

[EN] Performing live is the most exciting way of sharing our music with other people and we would love to start doing it with Frondibus. For now we cannot commit 100% of our time for that however we do whatever we can every moment to follow our excitement with no expectations or insistance on the outcome therefore we know that whatever come across our way is a necessary experience that we need to come through. This is indeed an early stage of our development and we know that and we are really devoted to gather new equipment because we want to get to the next level. For now we don’t even have a microphone stand for this interview, haha. This is just a next step in our evolution process.

[PL] Granie koncertรณw to najbardziej ekscytujฤ…ca nas forma dzielenia siฤ™ naszฤ… muzykฤ… z innymi, bardzo chcemy zaczฤ…ฤ‡ koncertowaฤ‡ z Frondibusem. Jest to w istocie bardzo wczesny etap naszego rozwoju, zdajemy sobie z tego sprawฤ™ i mocno poล›wiฤ™camy siฤ™ temu by skompletowaฤ‡ nowy sprzฤ™t by wejล›ฤ‡ w kolejny etap.

[EN] Ok, so letโ€™s go back to your debut recording for a while. Can you tell us more about the writing and recording process and the place you had been working at?

[PL] Wrรณฤ‡my jeszcze na chwilฤ™ do Waszego pierwszego dzieล‚a.

[EN] I could say that the writing process is a side effect of listening to a variety of music everyday, mostly instrumental music. It usually starts with one theme which stays in my head until it needs to be recorded. Then I go home and start playing it on a guitar or some virtual instruments, I add drums and bass, blend it with images and visuals, add some space and just play and experiment with it. Very often the whole song is being created that way however some new ideas emerge when we meet to play and record it together. Then it gets its final form. Our debut album “Leafage” is a collection of the songs recorded previously that way in Jasiek’s place. But in Zawoja we had an opportunity to fully focus on it because it was our holidays. We had a lot of time to do it, we were in beautiful natural surroundings of mountains and forests. That kept us relaxed all the time even though we were working really hard. I was living on the attic where we had our studio set up, everytime I woke up I was bumping into the guitars and amps and we were starting our work from early morning finishing at midnight. Meanwhile we had some trips on the forest and that made us work hard and not feel tired at all. It was a really good time and I hope we will have more opportunities like that in the future because it is the best way to record an album. Take a week off, get closed in some really nice place and just focus on the music.

[PL] Powiedziaล‚bym, ลผe proces powstawania utworรณw jest efektem ubocznym czฤ™stego sล‚uchania rรณลผnej muzyki, gล‚รณwnie instrumentalnej. Bardzo czฤ™sto powstaje w ten sposรณb caล‚y kawaล‚ek jednakลผe gdy spotykamy siฤ™ by nagrywaฤ‡ pojawiajฤ… siฤ™ nowe pomysล‚y. Nasz pierwszy album jest zbiorem utworรณw nagrywanych w ten sposรณb wczeล›niej u Jaล›ka. Lecz w Zawoi mieliล›my moลผliwoล›ฤ‡ caล‚kowitego skupienia siฤ™ na tym poniewaลผ mieliล›my wtedy ล›wiฤ…tecznฤ… przerwฤ™. Mieliล›my mnรณstwo czasu, byliล›my otoczeni piฤ™knymi gรณrami i lasami. Dziฤ™ki temu czuliล›my siฤ™ zrelaksowani pomimo ciฤ™ลผkiej pracy. Mieszkaล‚em wtedy na strychu gdzie rozล‚oลผone byล‚o nasze studio, kaลผdego rana wstawajฤ…c obijaล‚em siฤ™ o gitary i wzmacniacze i zaczynaliล›my pracฤ™ koล„czฤ…c o pรณล‚nocy. Wziฤ…ล›ฤ‡ tydzieล„ wolnego, zamknฤ…ฤ‡ siฤ™ w jakimล› ล‚adnym miejscu i skupiฤ‡ na muzyce.

[EN] What’s there in nature thatโ€™s so inspiring?

[EN] I think we can all feel that. Experiencing nature it a wonderful way to get in touch with our true existence. We are all part of nature, we can see how everything in nature coexist like in an eternal dance of elements. Everything from the biggest star to the smallest plant is a part of nature and everything might be inspiring. Nature shows the full spectrum of power manifesting itself in a variety of ways. As swaying trees or a stormy sea, volcano eruption or the collision of stars. It is a nature’s way to show its power. It is fantastic when you can feel that you are a part of it. We should appreciate it, we live in 21st century and sometimes forget or don’t think about it but we are always part of the universe. You can see and feel how beautiful existence is simply because it exist, and as you know that you’re part of this one beautiful organism you can then realize that you’re beautiful too.

[PL] Myล›lฤ™ ลผe wszyscy moลผemy to odczuฤ‡. Doล›wiadczanie natury jest wspaniaล‚ym sposobem na zbliลผenie siฤ™ do naszego prawdziwego istnienia. Wszyscy jesteล›my czฤ™ล›ciฤ… natury, moลผemy zaobserwowaฤ‡ jak wszystko w naturze wspรณล‚istnieje w niekoล„czฤ…cym siฤ™ taล„cu ลผywioล‚รณw. Wszystkie rzeczy, od najwiฤ™kszej gwiazdy do najmniejszej roล›liny sฤ… czฤ™ล›ciฤ… natury i wszystko moลผe inspirowaฤ‡. Jest to sposรณb w jaki natura ukazuje swojฤ… moc. To niesamowite gdy moลผemy poczuฤ‡, ลผe jesteล›my czฤ™ล›ciฤ… tego wszystkiego. I powinniล›my to doceniaฤ‡, ลผyjemy w dwudziestym pierwszym wieku i czasami zapominamy lub o tym nie myล›limy lecz zawsze bฤ™dziemy czฤ™ล›ciฤ… wszechล›wiata.
