Gil Cerrone’s “I May Have Cried a River for Him but He’s No Depardieu” marks a striking moment for fans of Australian screamo. Released on January 9, 2025, this 50-second cover is a heartfelt nod to Love Like… Electrocution’s 2002 self-titled album, delivering a sharp yet nostalgic spin on what is widely regarded as a skramz classic.
This track represents Gil Cerrone’s first—and reportedly only—attempt at a cover. Originally a standout due to its unrelenting catchiness and haunting refrain of “Melt Wizard!”, the song has now been reimagined with both reverence and individuality. The band acknowledges the weight of covering a track so ingrained in the AU screamo scene’s identity, stating, “We hope we could do this one justice and add our own spin to what is an AU skramz classic.”

Integral to this rendition is Scott McLatchie of TWAAG and Alloxylon, whose powerful vocal contributions elevate the track further. The recording process, undertaken by Simon Maisch and mastered by Christopher Brownbill at Lily Street Studios and Underground Audio, ensures a polished delivery that retains the raw emotion of the original. Additionally, a second vocal track was recorded by McLatchie.

The release is steeped in dedication. The band explicitly honors Zac Hagan, offering the track as a tribute: “Dedicated to Zac Hagan, may he have found peace. RIP.”
Fans were already primed for the release thanks to a recent NTS show curated by Darcy, which revisited this period of Australian screamo. The show received glowing feedback, further affirming the enduring impact of this niche genre and its creators. For those craving a live experience, there’s hope this track might make its way into Gil Cerrone’s upcoming gigs as the band hits the road next week, alongside Blind Girls and Frail Body!
