Spares have released the official video for “New Indignities,” a track from their upcoming split EP with Treasure Pains, due September 26 through Council Records and Wiretap Records. The single arrives digitally on September 5, with the video premiering today, right here on IDIOTEQ. Both bands will also appear at The Fest in October.
Vocalist Gabriel Mathews explained that the song comes from material left over from their debut release: “When we recorded our EP, we had two finished songs that didn’t quite make sense in the context of that record. We’re excited to share these outliers on this split. ‘New Indignities’ is a ripper, a litany of complaints about the lameness of contemporary life laced with the recognition that so many others have it so much worse.”
The split features four tracks: “Joke” and “New Indignities” from Spares, alongside “Left to Give” and “Strike” from Treasure Pains. A 12” vinyl edition is available for pre-order via Council Records.
Spares formed in 2022 in a Portland basement with members connected to North Lincoln, Youth League, Lock and Key, Shores, Amusement, and FeverSleep.
Their self-titled EP, engineered and mixed by bassist Mike Vera, was released in February 2025 and described by Razorcake as “a six-song blast of dense rock with a fair amount of jagged edges… Immersive.”
The band has been building momentum through their live sets across the Northwest. Their lineup includes Mike Large (guitar), John Massel (drums), Gabriel Mathews (vocals), Ryan Shanahan (guitar, backing vocals), and Mike Vera (bass, synth).
Treasure Pains, based in Durham, North Carolina, came together around writing sessions with Jessi and Zach of Youth League and later added Kellette and Kyle of wolvesx4. Their 2024 debut album “Charming” introduced a sound that mixes melancholic intensity with sharp post-hardcore edges, sustained by what’s been described as an almost tireless force of energy.
