For fans of KILLSWITCH ENGAGE hoping for a progressive leap forward in composition, “Forever Aligned” may feel like a familiar retread rather than a groundbreaking evolution. The single relies on the band’s tried-and-true methods, delivering the melodic aggression they’re known for without straying far from their established formula. Still, for loyal followers of their style, this is quintessential KILLSWITCH: heartfelt, heavy, and precise.
The track serves as the lead single for their upcoming album This Consequence, set to release on February 21, 2025 via Metal Blade Records. The album marks the band’s ninth studio effort and their sixth with vocalist Jesse Leach since his return in 2012.
In a recent social media post, Leach reflected on the inspiration behind “Forever Aligned,” dedicating it to his wife and their deep connection. “It’s that DEEP love, that connection that supersedes our comprehension. A direct line to God, a higher power, Jah, the universe—take your pick and live it!” Leach wrote. He also expressed pride in the forthcoming album, calling it a labor of love: “This album took everything within me, every cell, every breath, and I wouldn’t change a thing.”
The album’s creation was not without challenges. Guitarist Joel Stroetzel previously shared insights into the recording process, noting that the band recorded “too many” songs, forcing them to decide what would make the cut. Jesse Leach, meanwhile, retrained his voice to recapture the grit and intensity fans expect, revisiting older techniques to elevate his performance. Stroetzel described the results as leaning towards heavier, faster songs, while maintaining the melodic elements that define KILLSWITCH ENGAGE’s sound.
Leach has described This Consequence as the most challenging album of his career, both personally and creatively. From grappling with the vocal demands to crafting deeply personal lyrics, the effort has pushed him to his limits. Vocal coach Melissa Cross, known for her work with extreme metal vocalists, played a pivotal role in helping Leach refine his approach.
2024 marked KILLSWITCH ENGAGE’s 25th anniversary, commemorated with a special Revolver magazine collector’s edition that chronicled their journey from underground pioneers to heavy metal mainstays. The deluxe issue featured interviews with both current and former band members, a KILLSWITCH ENGAGE family tree, and a retrospective on their seminal album Alive or Just Breathing.
As the year closes, the band looks to the future. This Consequence is their first full-length release since 2019’s Atonement and offers a glimpse of what’s to come. The band will embark on a headline North American tour starting March 5, 2025, supported by Kublai Khan TX, Fit For A King, and Frozen Soul.
With “Forever Aligned” offering a taste of the album’s direction, it remains to be seen whether This Consequence will resonate as a bold new chapter or a reaffirmation of the band’s steadfast identity. Either way, it’s clear that KILLSWITCH ENGAGE continues to pour their soul into every riff, scream, and lyric, ensuring their legacy endures.
