Heavy metal grew from British blues in the 1960s, putting loud amplified guitars, repeated riffs and pounding rhythms at the centre of the music. Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath helped establish its early framework. By the late 1970s, bands including Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Motörhead were pushing metal into faster and leaner forms that fed later branches of the genre.
Swedish trio Möuth look back toward proto-metal, while Judas Priest came out of metal’s first years with some of its heaviest riffing. Juliet Ruin sit close to hard rock, and Protest The Hero describe reaching their sound through punk first, then metal and progressive metal.
The Bloodstock New Blood Stage takes its lineup from Metal 2 The Masses, the regional heats the festival runs across the UK and Ireland, and every band that reaches it is still unsigned, while Flummox bring a chaotic collision of styles.
