It is my pleasure to give you Make That A Take Records‘ “Songs for Mum – A Compilation vs Cancer” album. “2015 marks a significant milestone in my life as its 25 years since I lost my mother to cancer in 1990. I was only 9 years old and growing up without her was pretty rough. Somewhere along the next few years I stumbled into punk rock and found the part I’d been missing, a creative outlet for all the feelings I was constantly trying to make sense of. It soon became apparent this was not going to be just a “phase” and I grew into a whole different family where I could do the things I needed to do and say the things I needed to say. It’s the worst cliche to say, but punk rock saved my life. In a stark reminder of how pertinent this disease is, our family is once again involved in a battle against it right now and the help and advice from The Maggie’s Centre has been a huge factor in trying to overcome this.

This compilation has been drawn from asking my peers I grew up playing music with, and throwing a few speculative emails off to bands I consider to have played a part in my life, inviting them to submit me a song of loss or hope. Those being the type of songs I always got most comfort from. It’s a truly personal project yet I know it will hold universal appeal, as we all must deal with loss in our lives.

The album drops digitally on Friday 14th August, 25 years to the day this journey began. This show happens on Sat 15th August and I’ve drawn in a bunch of my favourite acts to help us promote this cause, celebrate all the people who are no longer with us, and the raise what we can to help all the current battles against cancer.

Music is my biggest healer and greatest release, I can think of no other way to do this than to be in a room with my friends screaming my lungs out and choking back tears. Please come join us, every single penny raised will go directly to helping other families battling cancer.”
Barry Kydd, June 2015

Limited CD release (100 only) available on the night.

Super-energetic uplifting positive melodic hardcore punk from Central Scotland bring their rabble-rousing bangers back to Dundee for the first time since April. The “Rebuild, Recover” EP is a beast and there’s new music coming soon. One of the most righteous HXC bands in the country right now!

Dundee dream-pop played by punks preparing to hit the road in Europe for a mammoth three month stretching in support of their forthcoming “Saudade” LP. Last year’s “Despondent” album is a modern masterpiece and helped raise loads of money for SAMH.

Seldom seen Dundee punks emerge to play their first fully charged show in Dundee since BYAF VIII last November. With hearts on sleeves and full-throated vocals, expect to hear emotive punk songs of hope from the forthcoming debut LP as well as the “Old Haunts” EP.

Intense high octane fiddle-driven acoustic folk/punk two-piece from Highland Perthshire return with their modern punk influenced traditional Celtic/Scottish folk. They released the “It’ll Be Alright” EP at BYAF VIII.

Well-heeled stomping acoustic cowpunk that mixes equal parts righteous punk rock fury and introspective murder balladry wrought from over a decade in the punk rock trenches, like Leatherface covering Leadbelly.
