Here’s the official word about the project:
This is a project that has been a long time in the making. For almost two thirds of my life, my life has been in a close orbit around punk, hardcore, and music simply made with passion, anger, and intensity. I hope to capture the raw, natural energy of some of New Jersey’s finest with this effort, in a no-bullshit manner. No studio smoke and mirrors, just bands, some microphones, and a tiny little room.
Not to get all Lion King on anyone, but the great circle of punk life is one that revolves around the things one takes and gives, whether it be simultaneously or separately. Over the years, I have done both, as a guy in a band, as a promoter, and as a fan and a part of a multitude of communities that have grown and flourished in this area… and now I’ll try to give something new back, a collection of current great, hardworking bands from NJ, in an environment which demands that they bring their best to the table.
Over the past years, I got involved with home studios and recording, first as a way to hold on to great ideas while writing new material, and later expanding into more traditional recordings for bands I liked and people I wanted to work with. Throughout, I have always noticed that some of the most interesting recordings have sprung from live practice, perhaps under the simple notion that while the studio may allow us to create what we wish to sound like as musicians, the live take captures us as we are, rough spots and all.
This compilation is a fully live-in-the-studio adventure, and one in which I will be doing my best to document each band as you might hear them in a club, a basement, or a VFW hall. We’re going to skip the overdubs, the “can you move that?”, and the elements that make for a “perfect” studio session. Each band will get a 2 hour window to set up and record a song live, and I’ll get 2 hours to try and capture that “sonething” that makes each band unique and excellent in their own unique way.
Stay tuned for more info as it comes on how and when it will be released. I’m excited to be working with some excellent people on this, especially Jeff Zorn, who will be doing the majority of the visuals (which I’m very, very bad at).
While it may seem hopelessly perky to say, I can’t wait to see how this all turns out.
