In celebration of 25 years of Hex Records, the label continues its year-long monthly cover series, and this month, they have something special lined up. Birmingham’s own DAY JOB has taken on the challenge of covering QUICKSAND’s classic post-hardcore track “Head To Wall.”

QUICKSAND, known as pioneers in the post-hardcore genre, released “Slip,” the album featuring “Head To Wall,” in the early ’90s. This record has had a lasting impact on the music scene and continues to resonate with fans of gritty rock and 90s post hardcore today.

The founder of Hex Records shares a personal connection to the album, describing how “Slip” shaped their understanding of music and left an indelible mark on their taste. The influence of QUICKSAND’s innovative approach to hardcore is something that still drives the label’s ethos today.

Day Job

Covering such a significant track is no small feat, but DAY JOB was up to the task.

The band, known for blending elements of heavy hardcore, sludge, noise, and repetitive melodies, brings a fresh perspective to the original track.

Hex Records has a longstanding history with the members of DAY JOB, having first crossed paths during their time in the hardcore band LEGION and later reconnecting through their introspective project NULL. DAY JOB’s ability to merge their diverse influences into a cohesive sound makes them the perfect band to take on the challenge of reimagining “Head To Wall.”

Watch QUICKSAND perform “Head To Wall” live on KEXP with Walter Shreifels on vocals and guitar, Steve Brodsky and Sergio Vega on guitars, and Alan Cage on drums, recorded on November 29, 2023.
