2024 has arrived with a continued screamo revival, following several years marked by major band reunions, standout releases, and new groups proving that this dear style and niche of post hardcore is still alive and evolving. One of the most talked-about revivals comes from the influential New York City–based screamo act Saetia (interviewed for IDIOTEQ at this location), now back with their first new music since 1999.

Their upcoming three-song EP, titled Tendrils, is set for physical release on April 25, while all three tracks are expected to arrive digitally by the end of March.

Saetia have officially unveiled the EP’s title track, “Tendrils,” along with detailed information about its recording and release.

As the band explains: “Back in December of 2023 Colin shared an idea that he wrote on bass. We weren’t really serious about working on new music up until that point, but the five of us slowly started building on that original idea. Through lots of file sharing, trips to Philly and different rehearsal spaces around the United States over the past year, we were able to write and record these three songs.

We are releasing this music ourselves just as we did with our demo in 1997. We’ve pressed 1,000 copies on black vinyl (one sided 12”), which are available NOW for pre-order via @deathwishinc and @deathwisheurope (link in bio). Not sure if or when we’ll do a second pressing of this, so we suggest grabbing one if you’re interested. These will ship sometime at the end of April.”

Track listing:

  • Tendrils
  • Three Faces Past
  • Corkscrew Spine

The other two songs will be released in February and March.

The group’s original run, from 1997 to 1999, yielded one album and a handful of additional tracks that later appeared on compilation releases like A Retrospective and Collected. Despite that short initial run, Saetia became foundational in shaping the dramatic, unpredictable intensity of screamo.

In 2022, they returned to the stage for the first time in over two decades, though they parted ways with original guitarist Jamie Behar. Now, the lineup consists of Billy Werner (vocals), Adam Marino (guitar), Colin Bartoldus (bass), Steve Roche (drums), and guitarist/vocalist Tom Schlatter (also of You & I and Hundreds Of AU).

Their recent activities include an opening slot for Blood Brothers in December and a short string of reunion shows in 2022, one of which was captured on the 2023 release Live From Saint Vitus Bar. Discussions among the band members about returning to the studio began after these appearances. They confirm that the initial spark for new music came when Colin shared a bass idea back in December of 2023, leading to collaborative sessions scattered across multiple states.

“Tendrils” stays close to Saetia’s hallmark approach, balancing intense, angular guitar work and raw vocals that mix shouted passages with quieter moments. The recording conveys a sense of urgency that recalls their early material, with just enough contemporary polish to hint at personal and stylistic growth. Pre-orders for Tendrils are available now via Deathwish Inc. and on Bandcamp, with only 1,000 black vinyl copies pressed. The band emphasizes uncertainty about additional pressings and promises limited alternate covers and colored vinyl for record release shows in New York and Los Angeles.

They also note that the remaining two EP songs—“Three Faces Past” and “Corkscrew Spine”—will be released in February and March, respectively, building anticipation for the April 25 physical release.
