SOM unveil “Let The Light In,” a reflection of growth and change

February 20, 2025
1 min read

SOM have returned with “Let The Light In,” the title track of their upcoming third album, set for release on March 14, 2025, via Berlin’s Pelagic Records. Alongside the single, the band has dropped a video directed by longtime collaborator Samia Zaidi, setting the stage for a thematically interwoven visual narrative.

The song brings SOM’s sharpened melodic sensibility to the forefront without losing the weight that defines their post-metal foundation. Will Benoit’s voice hovers above layers of shimmering guitars, while halftime grooves and driving riffs keep the track anchored in the band’s signature heaviness. The result is a blend of ethereal shoegaze and crushing intensity, a sound they’ve come to describe as “Doom Pop.”

The accompanying video, directed by Zaidi, expands on the track’s themes of bittersweet optimism and human connection. Zaidi, who has worked with SOM on previous videos for “Awake // Sedate,” “Everything I Wanted,” “Center,” and their rework of “Personal Jesus,” frames “Let The Light In” as the first installment in a linked series of visual stories. The concept explores how optimism and darkness coexist within individual and social experiences. “This album, especially these two songs, thematically presented us with a unique visual opportunity to not only explore the act of summoning a sort of primal optimism during dark times, but to explore both the social and individual experiences of interiority within both optimism and darkness,” Zaidi explains.

The album itself reflects a period of upheaval for SOM. During the writing and recording process, the band’s founding drummer left, forcing a shift in their creative approach. Rather than pressing pause, SOM spent the rest of 2023 reshaping their sound and re-recording much of the material with a new lineup. That shift resulted in a record that feels both raw and expansive, marked by resilience rather than hesitation.

Since their formation, SOM have made a name for themselves through relentless touring, sharing stages with Katatonia, Sólstafir, and Slow Crush, among others. Their commitment to the road has taken them across North America, Europe, and the UK, refining their ability to craft immersive and dynamic live performances. The upcoming tour in support of Let The Light In kicks off in February 2025, with dates alongside Earthside and select headline performances.
