Alternative rock developed as a broad outside-mainstream field in the 1980s, gathering post-punk, jangle pop, punk-derived music, experimental rock and other styles that often circulated through independent labels. Nirvana’s mainstream breakthrough in 1991 changed the scale of the term, and 1990s alternative rock increasingly included heavier guitar music alongside its earlier underground branches.
PPR PPL pull alternative rock through post-hardcore, shoegaze and alternative metal. Sydney’s Tangled In Wires place it beside shoegaze blur and the spacious end of nu metal. RusT and Object Fiction show another present-day crossing where alternative rock and heavy shoegaze meet.
