For a lo-fi project, “The もしもしSupermagic Compilation”, the newest offering from Leipzig, Germany’s LINGUA NADA is a particularly imaginative work full of tasty distortions and cross-genre twists, including garage rock, noise rock, post hardcore, indie rock, and more instrumentations that expand far beyond the boundaries of standard and more radio friendly rockin’. And yet still, it’s very lo-fi, raw and dirty, and has been well described by the band themselves. Play it loud and scroll down to see what LINGUA NADA have to say about their new short recording.
We’re just going to leave it there on bandcamp and do a few tapes with Lala Schallpletten so a bunch of fat mid 30s german hipsters can buy them for the price of a vegan quarter pounder and say stuff like « waw i luv zee lo-fi produkzion on dat tape » or some shits like that and let it be forgotten in the deepweb, that´s where it belongs.
LINGUA NADA are: Adam Lenox Jr (guitars/vocals), Michel Geyer (guitars / vocals), Valentin “Valek” Tornow (drums), Christian “Siggi” Siebert (bass).
What’s the story of HELLO ‘もしもし ?
It´s Supermagic.
And it was more or less some kind of alterego to LINGUA NADA, or another version. We had a whole tour planned for LINGUA, but our bassplayer and our drummer a the time left the band 2 month before the tour happens. so Michel and I we just made a completely new set of songs with new guys, an angrier/garagy-er version of LINGUA : もしもしSupermagic. Now we might just use this name for shit and giggles, sometimes, to confuse people. But there is only one official band: LINGUA NADA. Fuck, does that make any sense ?
I’m not sure. Let’s dig a bit deeper to find out. Who’s that girl from the cover art?
That’s Adams aunt but she doesn’t know that she’s on the cover. If she would know this she would probably not like itm but she won’t find out because she mostly listens to R’n’B.
What’s the message of this record?
It´s not a real album or record, it`s a compilation of some of the garbage songs we´ve recorded as もしもし, that we won´t put on vinyl or do any release with. We didn´t expect anyone to ask us about it, to be honest we´d rather talk about our upcomming split with PAAN, the release of Shapeshift on Vinyl, the size of our private or you know, sutff that matters. We don´t want to give importance to this compilation.
I mean we would but….we´re not Ty Segall, we won´t release a whole record out of every pieces of shit we end up shredding. We ´re just going to leave it there on bandcamp and do a few tapes with Lala Schallplatten so a bunch of fat mid 30s german hipsters can buy them for the price of a vegan quarter pounder and say stuff like « waw i luv zee lo-fi produkzion on dat tape » or some shits like that and let it be forgotten in the deepweb, that´s where it belongs.
What makes you want to release it on the prehistoric format of a cassette tape? Tell us more about the popularity of tapes in your area.
Because Tapes are pretty cheap and as said earlier we won´t bother pressing a compilation on vinyl. Aren’t vinyls even more prehistoric anyways?
We don´t know much about its popularity to be honest.
Who’s behind Lala Schallpletten? How did you team up with the label?
We bought Tobi (the mastermind of Lala Schallplatten) 6 drinks at the destruction party of his old recording studio… I guess it started from there.
Recording wise, what are your next steps? Tell us about your collaboration with PAAN.
We’re working on the split as we are writting this interview. And it´s gonna be grandiose. PAAN is one of the most innovative (and underrated) band of their genre since a Decade and we couldn´t think of a better band to share an LP with. PAAN´s new songs are so rad… We live in the same city and we´ve been ontour for what felt like a billion days in the UK last year. Adam was so much of a moody bitch on this tour that Polli, PAAN´s bassplayer, was about to get him in a room and beat him up. That probably creates friendship.
Can we catch you live and experience your live performance somewhere?
Right now we´re playing shows here and there but we´ll be on tour with PIGEON from Berlin begining October and then with Jaguwar in November. The best thing to do would be to check our facebook page for akward tour annoucment artworks or whatever one would call this.
