Fresh off their recent video premiere on IDIOTEQ, THE RUMJACKS are currently on tour in Europe right now for 5 months playing many major festivals and huge sold-out club shows. On the weekend the guys played at Woodstock Festival in Poland. They played main stage and the crowd was over 400 000 (FOUR HUNDRED THOUSAND)… You literally cannot see the end of the crowd in any direction!
About the new record:
Recorded at Bomba Studios in regional Victoria, Sleepinโ Rough, the Sydney quintetโs third long-player, picks up where 2015โs Sober & Godless left off. Booming from the get-go with โPatron Saint Of Thievesโ, a thundering punk aesthetic intertwined through the groupโs Irish and Scottish musical heritage, this album is full throttle, all spit and bile, raucous and real.
But donโt make the mistake of thinking The Rumjacks are just an angry bunch of punks. Far from it โ their music, while hard and fast for the most part, carries with it an element of fun and frivolity, harking back to their Old Country roots, places where music is an integral part of community gathering, soundtracking the times with an almost savage joy.
And this is Sleepinโ Rough. The melodicโA Fistful Oโ Rosesโ, the acousticโLes Darcyโ, the ska-esque โKathleenโ, all carry a cheeky bonhomie, sometimes belying their subject matter, but always bringing a smile, a head-nod, a foot-tap. These tracks sit tidily alongside flat-out punk (the opener, โDead To Meโ, โZielona Goraโ), and the bandโs now trademark mixture of the two.
As frontman Frankie McLaughlin has said, theyโre not trying to reinvent anything, theyโre just trying to produce the best songs they can in order to make a connection with the people listening. And thatโs what Sleepinโ Rough is too โ a clutch of real songs written and performed by real people, for other real people. Stories of life, love and loss, set to a throbbing beat. Sleepinโ Rough sees The Rumjacks in career best form.
