Noise rock grew from punk and no wave with abrasion, distortion and dissonance pushed to the front of the music. Some bands build that pressure almost entirely from guitars, while others add electronics, repetition or harsher studio treatment. Sonic Youth brought one melodic branch to a wider alternative audience, while Swans, Big Black and the Touch & Go orbit showed how much darker and more confrontational the form could become.

New Zealand veterans Lung are still rebuilding songs after more than three decades. Athens band Falooda connect their record to a rehearsal-building community displaced by tourism, while Chicago duo Mr. Phylzzz recorded at Electrical Audio before a new Amphetamine Reptile release. The Shits, Iron Linings and Barren Womb take the style toward post-hardcore, punk and heavier rock. Noise remains the central device even when the neighbouring genre changes.
