Post-rock keeps rock instrumentation but gives sound and texture more weight than hooks or a fixed verse-chorus structure. Vocals are often absent or secondary, while ambient, jazz, dub, krautrock and electronic music have all entered the style at different points.

Two 1991 records became early reference points for that shift: Talk Talk’s “Laughing Stock” and Slint’s “Spiderland”. The term was later applied by critic Simon Reynolds to Bark Psychosis, and Tortoise became one of the bands closely associated with post-rock as the 1990s progressed.

IDIOTEQ’s older coverage reaches several parts of that history. Warsaw’s Tides From Nebula brought a Polish instrumental perspective into the site in 2012. Kyoto’s LOW-PASS connected post-rock with math-oriented instrumental writing, We Stood Like Kings built projects around music for silent films, and OUR FRIEND, SURRENDER worked from an ambient and instrumental direction.

Russian Circles returned in 2026 after two decades of work, For What You Burn bring another instrumental approach, and hubris. add another current European post-rock entry. Mono provide another long-running line through the genre.

IDIOTEQ (pronounce “idiotec”) is a phonetic transcription of the word Idioteque – the act of suddenly going into a crazy, seizure like state. A vision of a society, where people are increasingly more obsessed with pointless technology, selfishness and mindless entertainment than life itself.
