The power of resilience, unity, and self-transformation permeates To Be Gentle’s latest track, ‘Spright Blue.’ Rooted in themes of inspiration and perseverance, the song draws from an unlikely yet deeply personal source: the Spright archetype from the trading card game Yu-Gi-Oh!.
Spright Blue, the central figure in this archetype, symbolizes hope and collaboration. Though individually small, the Sprights together form an indomitable force, a concept that carries over seamlessly into the song’s message.
According to Eve, the mind behind To Be Gentle, ‘Spright Blue’ is a continuation of the cathartic sonic landscapes that define the project, but with a deliberate shift toward something more uplifting.
“A lot of my music, whether it sounded like it to past me or not, sounds very sad, lofi, and even scary to current me,” they explain. “Not that those sounds or feelings are bad, but I wanted to lean more into what kind of work I did on the music of ‘Inner Child Healing’ where it sounds hopeful and inspiring while still maintaining catharsis through an emotional sonic framework.”
The song takes on a unique perspective: the lyrics are written from the viewpoint of Spright Blue, encouraging its fellow Sprights—Spright Red, Spright Jet—as they fight to protect the “Endless Engine Argyro System.” The concept mirrors the emotional struggles and resilience that have been a constant theme in To Be Gentle’s music. “My inspiration stems from mental illness and the struggles that come with such things. The feelings of hope, courage, and passion are perhaps a different side of that coin that are present on ‘Spright Blue,’” Eve elaborates.
Beyond the personal resonance, the Spright archetype is a natural poetic device. Sprights are incarnations of lightning storms—ephemeral, yet immensely powerful. The song channels this imagery into a structure that is explosive, cinematic, and emotionally packed.
In just over two minutes, ‘Spright Blue’ encapsulates a vast range of intensity, shifting between moments of quiet determination and all-consuming bursts of energy. There is an overwhelming sense of movement, as though the music itself is falling from the sky, striking with purpose, much like the Sprights it represents.
The lyrics reinforce this spirit:
“Alone, I sow the seeds of newfound inspiration / Together, we are insurmountable / Falling from the sky / We strike with haste.”
It is not about standing alone in defiance but about the transformative power of connection. The Sprights, much like those who find solace in To Be Gentle’s work, find strength in their bonds. This sense of unity culminates in the closing lines:
“This is the sound of my spirit / Tapping into the endless engine / Together, we will never cease to be.”
Musically, the track carries that same duality—delicate yet overwhelming, intimate yet massive in scope. Every layer feels deliberate, an intricate weaving of emotion and raw sonic energy. There is no filler, no excess; just a compressed storm of sound and feeling.
‘Spright Blue’ is a glimpse into the quiet evolution of To Be Gentle. While the upcoming LP remains largely under wraps, Eve hints at new production and writing approaches that will be evident in the full release. Meanwhile, they continue the process of re-recording past albums, including ‘Unbroken’ and ‘Wounded,’ ensuring that past works are preserved while moving forward with a new vision.
This track is a rare intersection of deeply personal meaning and an abstract, mythic narrative.
Eve has crafted something that transcends its inspiration, using the imagery of lightning storms and trading card lore to frame a message of endurance and inner power. ‘Spright Blue’ is a surge of momentum, a reminder that even the smallest forces can be unstoppable when they come together.
