Wrzask: Warsaw dark punks Träume share impressive debut album

2 mins read

The essence of Polish punk has always been about more than music—it’s rebellion, grit, and a sense of community, born from a country whose history is soaked in resistance. Träume, a Warsaw-based hardcore punk quartet whose debut LP Wrzask (“Scream” or “Shriek”) cuts through the noise, takes its place in a long line of Polish punk bands that have challenged norms and embraced DIY ethos. Released by Quality Control HQ, a London-based DIY label, Wrzask feels less like an album and more like a primal call back to the raw energy that birthed bands like Siekiera and Zbombardowana Laleczka in the 1980s.

On the surface, Wrzask is a relentless onslaught of bleak noise—a “hardcore stew,” as some fans have described it, where every track bleeds into the next, creating an overwhelming sense of chaos. But it’s not chaos for chaos’s sake. Beneath the grit, there’s a method to the madness. The sound is dirty, layered, and unpredictable, echoing the noir hardcore of a time gone by, but with a modern edge that feels urgent.

Tracks like “Ostre Przedmioty” stand out, both brutal and captivating, pulling listeners into a schizophrenic world shaped by jagged guitar riffs, pummeling drums, and a striking vocal performance.

What makes Wrzask particularly noteworthy is the juxtaposition between its raw, feral sound and the haunting, almost spectral presence of female vocals woven throughout the record. These vocals call back to the dark undercurrents of 80s Polish music, with a delivery that feels at once nostalgic and completely out of time.

Träume isn’t content with staying confined to Warsaw, though. They’ll be hitting the road this fall, bringing Wrzask to audiences across Europe. Starting on October 31st with an LP release show in Warsaw alongside Pisuar, the band’s tour will take them through Berlin, Aarhus, and as far north as Finland, before wrapping up in Vilnius.
