Wondering Sound has the premiere of the new video from Philadelphia’s YOUNG STATUES, for their track “Run the River Dry” off their critically acclaimed sophomore full-length The Flatlands Are Your Friend, out now via Run For Cover Records. “The video stars the Philly band trekking through a spooky dreamworld full of gravediggers, abandoned trailers and sinister forests, acting as a fitting backdrop for the indie-pop track’s somber but cryptic lyricism and waves of soft, slithering beats,” explains Wondering Sound of the clip. YOUNG STATUES also announced a January co-headlining tour with Gates today, and The City on Film (Bob Nanna of BRAID) will open on the 10-city run (all tour dates below).
To record The Flatlands Are Your Friend, Young Statues returned to Chase Park Transduction Studio, the site of their first demos, to record with Drew Vandenberg and Andy LeMaster (Saddle Creek). The result is 11 richly intricate, textured tracks that are arguably the best songs yet from the quartet. Lush and brooding, The Flatlands Are Your Friend sees the group challenging themselves in new ways, with a result that is as impressive as it is rewarding for the listener.
Young Statues make the sort of ethereal indie rock that has the ability to catch the casual listener off-guard. Earnest and introspective without being cloying, it’s easy to be swept away in the songs without realizing just how intricate each of them are. What began as an impromptu road trip to a studio in Athens, Georgia in 2010 for Cirignano soon developed into Young Statues as the promise he and others saw in those early sessions became apparent.
“Flatlands recalls a Transatlanticism-era Death Cab For Cutie, as Carmen Cirignano’s wounded vocals anchor choruses that are artfully crafted, yet big enough to shake stadiums.” –AV Club“Folky, anthemic indie rock along the lines of 2000s Saddle Creek” –BrooklynVegan
“Flatlands finds Young Statues more mature, somber and deliberate in the band’s approach to music making. It’s the kind of record you’ll never put on unintentionally.” –WXPN
