I am truly honored to have these guys here. Ladies and gentlemen, here’s AUSSITÔT MORT!
This French post hardcore / post metal act formed in 2005 produces music and lyrics you really need to get to know with. They hail from Caen and keep experimenting with their sound resulting in the unique blend of ambient, post metal and energetic post hardcore / screamo with an amazing atmospheric touch. There’s no way to talk about it, you just need to hear for yourself. It is better to hear once than read one hundred times, so please do not hesitate to play of the play buttons shared below.
Epic, hammer riffs, melancholic landscapes and magic that will surely remain in your memory. Thoroughly recommended. That’s basically the reason why I was knocked down by their set at last year’s Fluff Fest and this was the reason I tried to get to this band, despite the fact they are so intangible and it was a struggle to reach them! ;) Anyway, here’s my entertaining interview shooting you a nice update from the band and revealing some of the thoughts that bloom in their heads in 2012/2013 era.
Hey, guys! So good to have you here. You’re quite intangible, I must say [smiles]. 1 official update a year, no official word since June. I mean, come on! Are you hiding from someone? [laughs]
Hey, we’re just like an old boat. We need to repair our engine before leaving again !
Seriously we just have many occupations, other bands, families, works and so on, and we usually do things slowly (we don’t know how to do it faster !).
Anyway we ‘re not so involve in “the quick information highway”, we just don’t need to communicate every day with people on internet, nobody wants to know if I feel good today or if I have advises for people this week ! Every good idea can wait for a couple of weeks to be share no ?
We just want to grow by our own, doing music when we can, tour when we have the possibility and have our disks out when we agree with the cover, the way of selling etc.
But don’t worry we don’t have to hide from anyone !!
Fair enough [smiles]. You’ve been preparing some new songs for a new album. How it’s been going? It’s high time to reveal some secrets [smiles]. Please share some details with us [smiles].
As I said before we work very slowly, every song looks like a Birth, it’s painful, it’s long, and when it’s done we’re so happy !!
Any secrets…um…there will be no more secrets if I tell them !!
We are like autistic people when we are doing new songs, we quarrel all the time, we spend more times outside speaking about our lives than composing !!
Are you planning to put out some splits maybe? It’s been over a year since you last teamed up with a band to release one. ENVY’s waiting, guys [laughs]. This would be a killer release, by the way [smiles].
We’re just waiting for a new stuff that will be a split with guys from THE CATALYST. It will be out in a few weeks!
A split with ENVY, you mean a remix!
It would be great but I don’t think they even know us!About them I’ve got this story: we had this tour in Japan 4 years ago with HEAVEN IN HER ARMS, and we play the day next ENVY during this tour, and this show was organize in Fukushima…I think the place was totally destroyed by the tsunami…
Ok. Let’s discuss your 2-song hammer 12’’ “La Ride Du Lion”? There was a lot of teasers for the release, pre-orders, etc. but neither you nor ADAGIO 830 did issued a release after its premiere. Please tell us more about the meaning of the lyrics and how they correspond to the artwork done by Mara Piccione.
The lyrics are more personal on the last songs, they are still about politics “la bourse ou la vie” and the world we live in “la ride du lion” but they more includes personal stories or works “une défaite à la piaule”, “supraliminaire”, or situation that we met . They also take roots in History “Supraliminaire”, “sur un radeau…des cannibales”.
Mara is totally free to draw what she wants, we just like the way she include our songs in her drawings. We can recognize small parts of what we said in her paintings and the atmosphere and the colors fit with what we like.
I saw your apocalyptic set at last year’s Fluff Fest. Amazing trance experience. How did you like the fest? Did you hang out for the whole weekend?
Yeah, the show at the Fluff was crazy, we really enjoy it !!
We like to go there to discover bands, meet people dance on 80’s tubes and swim in the big swimming pool !
It’s a great time for us to speak with friends we didn’t see for a long time, a kind of summer meeting too !
Have you experienced any interesting stories, seen some cool venues or bands on your last tour with NINE ELEVEN?
Oh there are couple of stories about this tour, I think we will write a report soon.
I’m not sure about the intellectual interest of this report !! But we had great time really, and this summer tour in Eastern Europe gave us the chance to meet great people and old friends (in Budapest, or in Zagreb…), to see incredible venue (Neuesbrandenburg…), and gave us a global vision of the DIY situation in Europe. That make think, laugh, speak, but also make us frightened about the situation of fascism in Eastern Europe.
Wow. Funny you should say that. I was about to ask you about it. How different it is comparing such movements in your country? What’s most frightening about it?
In France fascist people are still hiding, there are some political movements that try to make us forget about fascism, they pretend to be more patriot, more closed with the workers, but if you listen a little bit, they always use the same way to get the power, telling us that foreign people are taking our jobs, saying that the others cultures are bad and based on violence and thefts, saying that we don’t need the others to grow, saying that a white Christian society is the only way of living, I hate fascism.
I thought that history had shown us the limit of this, but people are forgetting .
The ideology is easy to destroy, it’s based on racism, violence, division of the population, terror, but sometimes fascist people are hiding behind other ideology and it’s harder to fight.
The most frightened for me is that fascists and neo nazi are not hiding anyway, they are proud of themselves and a large part of the population let them do without thinking of the consequences…
but just remember Argentina, Germany, Spain and in a way the Eastern Europe, all these countries have suffered from a form of fascist government.
Ok, let’s talk touring now. You’re scheduled to play a Moscow show with HEAVEN IN HER ARMS in March 2013. Tell us about the gig and your future touring plans. What should we expect? A proper tour perhaps?
We just go there for two or three shows with HEAVEN IN HER ARMS. We will play in St Petersburg, Moscow, and we are talking about having a show in Kiev perhaps. That will be in March.
But first we planned a tour in France at the end of January, 8 days from Paris to Toulouse.
It’s our first real French tour and we will tour with guys of SUGARTOWN CABARET.
What will come next we don’t know now !!
SED NON SATIATA reformed for a couple of shows in the States this Summer. We were excited to finally have the opportunity to chat with them earlier in 2012. Do you know those guys? Have you played together in the past?
No we don’t know really know them.
We never played together in the past but I would enjoy meeting them, I’ve got one LP “le ciel de notre enfance” that really impressed me when it came out.
But for sure, they are not as known as they should be in France. They really figure the “french-emo“ anyway !
Strange [laughs].
So how’s Caen music scene going on these days? Do you still participate it its live as much as years ago?
Things are going on, Cédric , Antoine and Marc are still organising shows, and all the bands we play in (AUSSITOT MORT, SUGARTOWN CABARET, BURNING BRIGHT, THE EYE OF TIME) are still supporting bands on tour when they come here in Caen. We are trying not to occupy shows all the time but when friends are coming we always try to book shows with them.
As far as I’m concerned I think that more people in this “family” are involved now, and even if it’s sometimes hard to deal with every political or musical sensivity I can tell that there were many very interesting and original events: people are doing vegan food at shows and everybody can eat if he wants to, we had Eugene the singer of OXBOW, who came to speak about his last book, we organised a projection of “Blood, Sweat and Vynil: DIY in the 21st Century “ in a cinema and that was a nice nice moment!
And people from Destructure records, the independent radio 666 or the Gallery OH! are also involved in the DIY life in Caen. They always try to make things happen.
Cool.
What are the chances to see THE APOLLO PROGRAM or AMANDA WOODWARD reunited some day? [smiles]
Who? [smiles]
You mean the both in one band ? The APOLLO WOODWARD or AMANDA PROGRAM?
It would be a riot! I mean between people in the band.
As far as I am concerned the APOLLO PROGRAM is totally out, for AMANDA I can’t tell…
[laughs] Ok, let’s move beyond the music for a while.
Are you into politics? How do you like your new old president? Did you like the switch? [smiles]
Put Sarkozy out of the power was a mission! We couldn’t go more with this guy and his government.
We don’t enjoy too much our new old president, we still fight for happier moments!
We don’t have the same political way of thinking in the band but we all go in the same direction!
We wish better way of life with better ways of thinking!
What would you change in your country if you had the direct power to do so?
I will try to change our stupid French way of thinking !
People are hopeless but when they get a nice place to work they just try to keep it even if they need to walk on other people to keep it.
We need to be more reasonable with money, ecology, culture…
We should think about the place of work in our society, there is so much things that should be more important in life: family, friends, love, passions, earth…but anyone who will say that will be put out of the ring!
I’m not a hippie (the others would said that!), but if we live in what we call a modern society we should definitely turn more on human and not on profit or social success.
I would include more discussion about vice in our society…I mean we live for centuries with the same religious precepts, and nobody wants to talks about them, people are just following and they sometimes get more aggressive to keep this precepts. And even if I try, I do the same…
How are you trying to change that in yourself? Do you attempt to change people’s minds somehow? With music and lyrics? If not, then how?
I’m not trying to change anything, every man has his own personality, but I try to be respectful and opened mind on new way of thinking, I don’t like any form of proselytism, I think everyone can live his life as he want if don’t try to change the way of living of other people.
We can discuss, we can compare, or give advice but being respectful with other way of thinking.
In an another hand I think that society need to be hurt to grow; i mean we need stings to wake it up.
Sometimes revolutions make people grows up, and it’s not always peaceful.
Music is more like a box with words inside, we try to make it as natural as possible, we only play what we like to play without thinking of who will listen. The lyrics are more a vision of our world, or a thought of what we live in our lifes. We give a kind of information of what we are at this moment not advices about what people should do.
DIY, bands and people who book the show, labels, etc are living for this passion and they always try to give people good times, they ask questions and they mix ways of thinking, it’s a good way to make people change. They defend a way of life based on human, friendly relationship, art (music, film, books…) and quite none profit society ! It’s not an easy way but I like it and I think it’s a good way of thinking !
Thanks for the chat! It was a pleasure. Please feel free to add anything you want.
Thanks for that, I wish we will meet !!
See you !
Great! Come to Poland then! [smiles] I wish I could put out a gig of yours in Warsaw. I believe we can arrange that, but let’s discuss it in private, shall we? [smiles]
Thanks again for your time! Cheers!
