CHARADES , a new young band from the southwest of Holland influenced by BRAND NEW, BASEMENT, and BIFFY CLYRO, incorporates the nineties sound of the likes of THE SMASHING PUMPKINS, DEFTONES, PLACEBO into their post rock sound as if they’ve been rocking with their power trio line-up for years. The band’s debut EP “Grey Pillar Sky“ was mastered by Jesse Cannon (Basement, Brand New, Dillinger Escape Plan, Misfits) and shows the enormous potential of the band in writing dynamic songs with a messages about loss, sex, inner struggles and dealing with life when becoming an adolescent. “Undress” is the opening track of the EP and is available below! Check it out and expect a CD/digital release on White Russian Records on May 26th.
The EP title “Grey Pillar Sky” is taken from the track “Colours“, in which singer Gerben doesn’t hide his criticism towards the world’s developments and the influence of media. A cynical view towards the idea that humans are so well developed that they can control the world.
Together with the EP’s other topics like depression and sex, “Grey Pillar Sky” is a beautiful trip thru adolescence and coping with loss, relationships, sex, inner struggles and trying to find a place in life.Musical influences of Brand New, Basement and Biffy Clyro seem very apparent, but upon further listening the listener can also find the shoegazy influences of Whirr and My Bloody Valentine.
