Norwegian melodic hardcore outfit DESPEREAUX have recently released a new single “The Fighter“, a foretaste of their new upcoming EP, Hugging the Cactus, slated for a September self-release. The trackย instantly sets the tone for the whole 5 minutes and it’s only getting better. Filled with power chords, dynamic vocals and addictive melodies, the track’s wild tempo and varied feel recall several patterns, from more rockish punk/metal records, to strictly emotional hardcore firecrackers.ย As an opening statement for the new EP, “The Fighter” leaves no doubt that this is going to be an intense record. Keep your eyes peeled for more amazing stuff from these guys.
Asked about the meaning of the track and the new record, the band explained:
TheFighter is the first track on our upcoming EP Hugging the Cactus. The concept for the record, is the need to embrace the part of you that is, in lack of better word, ugly. “Hugging the Cactus”, if you will. The main lyrical theme, if any, on this record, has to do with certain elements of the human psychology, and the ongoing personal struggles that take place within ourselves. Questions like: Am I the person I ought to be? If not, is that ok? Or is there some way for me to break the pattern? That sort of thing. As opposed to our last release, Luna Pars Fortuna, where the focus was more on external factors – the concepts of faith and fate for instance, Hugging the Cactus, has a bigger focus on internal factors. In the case of the single, “the Fighter“, we can go as far as to say that its about close personal relationships, but we don’t to reveal to much of our own interpretations of our songs. It seldom matches with the interpretations of other people.
Lyrics:
โIt takes two seconds to break your neck and…
be weary of my insights, you bastard, in these mattersโ
โIt takes one bottle to fill this black holeโ
Your mantelpiece-shipโฆit will dead certain sink or shatterPast the point of no return, past the point of โwill he ever learn?โ
Past the point of no return, sink matter as if to turnโWhy all this sleep talk?… an excuse of the weak heart?” He ledโฆ
the assumptions, the mind conjunctions – the mother of all fuck-ups
โWhy all this sleeptalk?… Well, because of your sleepwalk”
The smallest deed apprehends the grandest intention
from what I gatherPast the point of no return, past the point of โwill he ever learn?โ
Past the point of no return, sink matter as if to earnReaching a thought of ambivalence – what should I rather say to you?
Open my eyes so I can see. Crack open his skull, wonโt you?You think itโs better not to run away, I deem it better that you run away
Stop preaching from the book, you ought to hold your breath and commemorate her
Fractions of his mind, they are seemingly absent
Sometimes itโs just so hard to love youThis needs to be gone from me
I better act the part. Suffice to say Iโm out
Regarding what you say โ itโs now history
Still, I donโt want to shake you completely off
