VÆGTLØS transforms pain into a sublime artistic journey, offering a deep, resonant connection with “Aftryk”

February 1, 2024
2 mins read

We’ve witnessed the ebb and flow of countless melodies within this magazine, but seldom does an album echo through our corridors with such profound reverberation as this latest offering from VÆGTLØS, the Danish confluence of post-metal, post-hardcore, and blackgaze virtuosos.

Four tracks it may be, yet within their confines sprawls a vast emotional landscape, a near 40-minute odyssey that commenced with a single, anticipatory note back on January 5th. Now, as the complete tableau stands before us, it transcends mere sensory experience.

This album, each note and lyric, is a testament to the profound and often tumultuous journey of human experience. Born from the crucible of personal tragedy, transforms pain into a sublime artistic journey, offering a deep, resonant connection that only true artistry can achieve.

Today, we’re honored to give you its first full listen, along with a special track by track commentary below.

Words by VÆGTLØS.

Ingenting kan forhindre, at små struber skælver en forårsnat:

Troels’ sister in law was diagnosed with cancer for the second time in 2019 and this song was originally intended to be a get-better rally call, but as her life was tragically taken away, the song took a new direction: this song is for her young daughter.

Life is beautiful, and that is why it hurts, and we need to take that into account, when life shows its darkest face. Let every memory of people we love remain forever.

Først da vi bar din kiste gik det op for mig, hvor meget tungt du skulle igennem, før du blev så let:

This song is about Troels’ father that was taken away almost 20 years ago. The memory still lingers on and the thought of him not being a part of his grandchildren’s lives is still heartbreaking. The final lyrics of the song is a direct translation of Bob Dylan’s “If You See Her, Say Hello”, that was his favorite song and the song that played when his coffin was carried out from his home.

Her i vores hjerter bærer vi en ny verden:

This song might come off as the sole song on the record with a negative approach towards the person this song is about, but it is actually a deeply personal song, in which we try to extend a hand to people that are going through a hard time. Try to listen. Try to understand.

Vaegtlos

It is also about forgiveness, and moving on. Sometimes life happens and falls apart, and it might be out of your control. Try to learn. Try to listen. Try to understand. It is hard. Hopefully it will be worth it. We are all connected and we all carry the weight of the world on our shoulders. Be kind to people you meet. Because here in our hearts we carry a new world.

Tag dit knuste hjerte og lav det til kunst:

This song is about a close friend of singer Troels. His friend was diagnosed with terminal cancer, but he refused to lay down and die. He is still alive and kicking that awful disease right in the face.

Vaegtlos

The song is about unconditional love between friends and the lyrics contain references from Troels’ sons, who refuse to understand that young people could die. This song is a tribute to life and love between friends.

”Jeg elsker dig”/”I love you”. Words that are hard to say, but we managed to squeeze it into our new single.

It was the first song we wrote for the band, and it kickstarted a way of writing that was driven by honesty, kinship, and something we felt we could be proud of.

Something that we could play for our kids, and they would understand the beauty of friendship, and life and love, even though the theme for this song (and the rest of our album) comes from a place of tragedy.
