Dreams on Algorithms – grinding new ESCUELA GRIND is here

1 min read

Escuela Grind’s Dreams on Algorithms is the band’s third album and an evolution from their 2022 release, Memory Theatre. Known for their punishing fusion of grindcore and metallic hardcore, Escuela Grind continues their forward momentum with this new record. The songs have grown in length, depth, and groove, making for an intense listen.

Dreams on Algorithms leans heavily into the crushing production that allows every element to pop: the riffs, the pounding drums, and Katerina Economou’s vicious vocal performance. There’s also a surprise on the final track, Turbulence, where she breaks out clean vocals, showcasing her versatility and adding an unexpected layer to the album.

This time, the band gives themselves more space to explore intricate riffs and moments of scathing aggression. They shift tempos and dynamics, keeping listeners on their toes while still delivering the ferocity expected from a grindcore outfit.

Tracks like Planned Obsolescence stand out for their unorthodox time signatures, while collaborations like Constant Passenger (featuring The Acacia Strain) may not have the impact expected but still offer moments of heaviness.

Where Escuela Grind shines is in their commitment to pushing boundaries, both musically and lyrically. The band’s refusal to be pigeonholed into genre-specific expectations is clear, and as Economou stated, “We are no longer interested in meeting the standards of niche genres. Writing music that draws from our own personal tastes helps the crowds get to know us when they come to see us play.” The album is them doing what they love, mixing death metal, powerviolence, and grindcore into a brutal concoction of sounds.

The production work by Kurt Ballou at GodCity Studio gives the record its massive sound. His signature touch is apparent, elevating the guitars, drums, and vocals to new heights. Written mostly on the road, Dreams on Algorithms has the energy of a live show, a reflection of the band’s relentless touring schedule.

However, while Dreams on Algorithms is a step forward, it doesn’t fully break new ground for the genre. The songs hit hard and are executed well, but the album can feel a bit too familiar at times, sticking closely to established hardcore and grindcore tropes. It’s a solid record for fans of the style, but doesn’t necessarily push Escuela Grind into uncharted territory. It’s undeniably fun and brutal—perfect for live performances where the band’s energy truly shines.

The recent tour dates also highlight their growing influence, with stops across the U.S. including Philadelphia’s Underground Arts, New York City’s Bowery Ballroom, and more.

This pack thrives on the road, and Dreams on Algorithms feels like the perfect companion piece to those high-energy shows.
