NVAGE’s debut EP channels post-metal devastation into six tense reflections on denial, collapse, and buried pain

Clocking in at six tracks, the new EP from Nvage a lean and suffocating record from the eastern Paris-based duo that moves between atmospheric sludge, noise rock, and post-metal.

First introduced with the punishing single “Savior,” and followed by the more spacious “Blind Eye,” the EP now stands in full — a cohesive statement of rage, loss, and inner fracture.

Built around Clément Decuypere’s 6-string bass and Jérémy Hourdoir’s controlled, math-rock-influenced drumming, the EP is structurally heavy but not cluttered.

The duo gives their compositions air, only to choke it out with sudden density. The dynamic shifts are sharp but not theatrical. Vocals crawl up from below the mix, sometimes fragile, sometimes guttural — never ornamental.

There’s also a physical edge to the sound, amplified by the band’s use of custom gear made from recycled material. It’s not a gimmick. It’s part of how the music breathes — raw, uneven, and scarring. As Clément notes, the band’s identity is tied to contrast: “an aggressive intention confronted with vaporous sounds.”

Lyrically, each track isolates a theme — war, denial, mental illness, exploitation — but what binds the record is its clarity. Nothing is vague, and nothing is dramatized. The band doesn’t write poetry about fire — they point to the actual fire and the people pretending it’s not there. “Blind Eye,” as Clément explains, is “about refusing to see a problem even when it’s already there and has visible consequences. Quite literally, the song criticizes the act of standing still in the middle of a burning house.”

The commentary is brief, but precise — here’s how Clément describes each track:

Saviour video:

“Savior” is about rage, especially against people wanting to look like saviors while they’re only making things worse.

“In Here” is about war and the injustice that people have to run away from their home because someone decided he wanted to own the land.

“Games” is about the frustration of living in a dying world where people prefer fighting each other than trying to save it.

“Come Alive” is about depression and mental illness, coming back again and again.

“Blind Eye” is about living in a house on fire without facing it, convincing yourself that everything’s fine.

“Haunted” explores old traumas, coming back to you like ghosts from the past.
