If you’re looking for a serotonin boost, today we have a brain-stimuluting new music video from IDIOTEQ featured Tel-Aviv alternative artist TRACE KOTIK. “Chaos” comes from his debut album, “Everything has been done by now, so now, everything is possible…” was inspired by unrequited love and the feelings that follow, ultimately leading Jonathan Kotik to find inspiration in his emotional state. Echoing the myriad of emotions running through his mind, the track starts off introspective with acoustic guitar and piano, drawing to a soft lull and then building up to heavy distortion and a noisy array of “chaos” towards the end. The Tel-Aviv based indie rocker draws comparisons to Bon Iver, Wilco and Father John Misty, while cultivating his own unique and vast modern sound.
The music video is an installation created by Kotik’s father and colleague, Omer Harel, as part of their masters of design studies at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design. Featuring a barrel of water with a transducer underneath and a projector above, they are both connected to a computer that feeds data from a website that translates the collective moods (surprise, joy, anger, fear, sadness, love,) of Twitter users’ tweets in different locations, assigning each emotion a color. The transducer receives a frequency matching the color of the mood determined, which then feeds through the projector to cast that color onto the water. The video combines recordings of all of these emotions, symbolizing the chaos of feeling and the beauty of humanity.
Israeli singer/songwriter Jonathan Kotik, better known by his nom de plume, Trace Kotik, first stepped into the local Israeli indie-music scene & gained praise for his powerful indie-rock & alt-folk voice & style with his previous band JON back in 2017.
The band released a short debut EP that was shelved as the band came to some artistic disagreements & quickly broke-up. This led Jonathan to reinvent himself as Trace Kotik & to start work on his debut album “Everything has been done by now, so now, everything is possible…” (shortened title).
His work & style brings about comparisons to Bon Iver, Father John Misty & Wilco. Diverting from his previous band sound, his debut album adopts a more off-the-wall indie pop approach that evokes the spirit of Kurt Kobain all the while introducing a unique & vast modern sound, all produced by Kotik himself & recorded live in his home-turned-studio in the countryside, an hour ride from Tel-Aviv city.
Kotik grew up in Mishmeret near the sea & by the forest in the countryside of Israel.
His mother, a psychotherapist with a passion for the arts & education. His father, an industrial designer, hobby guitar builder & tech enthusiast, who built together with Trace his custom made guitar.
