Riot For Romance, the alternative rock trio spanning Georgia, Colorado, and Florida, releases “Single-Strand Burden” today, November 29th, 2024. This new track marks the next installment in their thematic collection, Learning to Unburden Myself, a series unfolding throughout 2024 and early 2025 under Sonic Spotlights and Steadfast Records.
“Single-Strand Burden” serves as a call to sever the ties of past mistakes and embrace the spirit of the present. Lead vocalist Jason Hansen articulates this resolve in the line, “This time we won’t sit in silent thought.” The song, alongside three additional new tracks, sets the stage for Step Two of their collection, slated for release in early 2025 both digitally and on physical media.
Earlier this year, in April, the band introduced Learning to Unburden Myself: Step One, recorded throughout 2023 and mixed by Ben Etter—renowned for his work with Franz Ferdinand, Deerhunter, Erasure, and Luxury.
Step One featured Riot For Romance’s rendition of Radiohead’s “Karma Police” along with three original songs. Reflecting on their choice to cover the iconic track, Hansen recalled, “I remember hearing ‘Karma Police’ for the first time in 1997. It was such a departure from Radiohead’s earlier alternative music. Our hope is that our interpretation truly pays homage to the original while infusing our brand of post-punk, shoegaze, and the alternative of today’s era.”
Riot For Romance comprises Jason Hansen (vocals, guitars, keys), Brett Miotti (bass), and Kelly Nunn (drums/guitars), musicians with over two decades of experience. Their backgrounds include performances with acts like Sleeping by the Riverside, the Sincerity Guild, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, Underoath, and Never Enough. Their eclectic influences are woven into a sound that bridges post-punk, shoegaze, and alternative rock.
The lyrics of “Single-Strand Burden” echo the band’s commitment to progression and self-awareness:
Cutting cords and loose threads
The burden of even one strand
The chorus reinforces this forward-looking stance:
We look to the horizon
Every path that is rising
Recently, fans experienced Riot For Romance live during their tour across the southeastern United States in support of Step One.
The band is expected to continue touring in 2025, celebrating and promoting the full collection of Learning to Unburden Myself.
