COMMON SAGE reflect on loss and change with “Until I’m Gone”

1 min read

COMMON SAGE, a post-hardcore band from Brooklyn, NY, is releasing their new single “Until I’m Gone,” which dives into themes of loss and change.

The track is part of their upcoming album Closer To;, set to release on November 22 via Equal Vision Records.

Frontman Julian Rosen explains the shift in perspective on the new record: “I wanted to try to get away from solely writing about my own experiences… ‘Until I’m Gone’ focuses on similar themes of change, loss, etc., but more specific to someone else’s struggles that I was subject to witness.”

The album is produced by Brett Romnes (who’s worked with ANXIOUS, OSO OSO, and HOT MULLIGAN), and it brings a fresh yet nostalgic post-hardcore sound that recalls the emotional depth of early 2000s emo and screamo.

As Stereogum notes, Closer To; harks back to the dramatic screamo of the Y2K era, while Brooklyn Vegan highlights the band’s authenticity, describing them as “torch-carriers of early 2000s-style emo.” Alternative Press adds that their track “Vehicles” sounds like something that would have dominated the Fuse countdowns in 2005.

COMMON SAGE’s take on post hardcore blends melodic elements from the Long Island emo scene with dissonant, chaotic riffing, reminiscent of bands like QUICKSAND and TITLE FIGHT. The band’s ability to navigate this mix without falling into predictable structures sets them apart. As Anti-Matter puts it, “there aren’t many bands doing this kind of thing this well right now.”

Closer To; also features collaborations with members of other notable acts like STAY INSIDE and SAINTHOOD REPS. The band continues to refine their sound with influences that nod to veterans like MODEST MOUSE and MEWITHOUTYOU, opting for more complex song structures over the simpler post-hardcore breakdowns.

In addition to their album release, COMMON SAGE will be supporting REGGIE & THE FULL EFFECT on a series of West Coast dates in December, including stops at the Goldfield Trading Post in Roseville, Chain Reaction in Anaheim, The Roxy in West Hollywood, and the Marquis Theater in Denver.
