I am always curious how young DIY bands manage to break into the scene, having to live in such turbulent times and wanting to express their concern, anxiety and anger. Warsaw uncompromising, old shool hardcore pack HEATSEEKER, who recently released a straight up ugly and powerful EP on Refuse Records, sat down with us to give us an over-all view of the challenges and struggles of a an ordinary hardcore band, the point of running it, and shoot some details on their plans for the coming months.

[EN] Ok guys. We have finally managed to squeeze you in and serve our readers a proper introduction to the band! The timing is great, as you’re about to hit the stage of the almighty Fluff Fest and we haven’t had a chance to discuss your explosive Promo EP (2016) and this year’s “On the ropes” EP (Refuse Records).
How long have you been working on these tracks and what’s changed in your approach to writing since you last sat down to compose for your 2014 7’’ ‘Desolation’?
[PL] Hej Panowie! W końcu udało nam się wcisnąć w Wasz grafik i zaserwować naszym czytelnikom odpowiednie wprowadzenie. Moment jest idealny, jako że za chwilę zmierzycie się ze sceną Fluff Festu, no i nie mieliśmy jeszcze okazji porozmawiać o świetnej Promo EP z maja 2016 i Waszej nowej, wydanej wspólnie z Refuse Records EPce ‘On the Ropes’.
Jak długo pracowaliście nad tymi kawałkami i co w Waszym podejściu zmieniło się od Waszej poprzedniej EPki ‘Desolation’ (2014)?
[EN] Writing new stuff takes quite a lot of time. And it’s not even about the creation proces itself, but more as a whole process from the initial riff, up to putting out record on physical format. The problem we dealt with was more on a personal level and the delay was caused by personnel castling. As far the main core of our line-up remains the same, every single recording of thr drums featured a different musician. We haven’t had too much luck with drummers, but I guess we fit right in with the global trend haha. Every single change resulted in more delays and we were kind of forced to go back to the drawing board and start from scratch, and despite the tiring side, it certainly has a creative spark to it. We have worked on this new record for quite a long time, we’ve produced 10+ tracks, from which we picked what interested us the most and what can be heard on the final, quite coherent edit of the EP.
[PL] Pisanie nowych rzeczy zajmuje nam sporo czasu. Nawet nie sam akt twórczy co bardziej cały proces prowadzący od pierwszego riffu do wydania płyty na fizycznym nośniku. Problem polegał głównie na roszadach personalnych, i o ile główny rdzeń zespołu jest stały to na prawie każdym nagraniu ktoś inny nagrywał perkusję. Nie mieliśmy szczęścia do perkusistów, ale wpisujemy się z tym w globalne trendy haha Każda zmiana składu dyktowała wydłużenie się całego procesu, trzeba było w pewnym sensie zaczynać wszystko od początku. I o ile było to na swój sposób męczące i jałowe to na pewno wpłynęło w pewnym sensie na kreatywny aspekt całego przedsięwzięcia. Nad materiałem pracowaliśmy długo, mieliśmy 10+ kawałków z czego wybraliśmy to co nas interesowało najbardziej – co zresztą słychać w dość spójnym brzmieniu całej EPki.
[EN] How did you team up with Youth 2 Youth Records? For those unfamiliar with the name, can you drop us a couple of lines about the label?
[PL] Jak skumaliście się z Youth 2 Youth Records? Powiedzcie coś więcej o tym labelu.
[EN] It was quite an easy equation – Paweł and Słon from VICIOUSXREALITY have decided to launch a new tape label dedicated to friend bands and we were in the middle of „On The Ropes” recording session. We had a lot of time until the release via Refuse Records, so we decided to put out 3 tracks (2 from the EP + an OPERASTION IVY cover) as a promo tape, in order to prepare some jams for shows. Paweł and Słoń took care of the production process and the cassette came out in a limited release. Y2Y Records has been growing since then and it has two more releases in its catalogue, the RADIANCE demo and FIGHT THEM ALL’s “Down The Drain” tape. The end of this Summer will make them a major league players as they’re about to out a new EP from BRIGHT LIGHT on vinyl! They’re also plotting another release from a new straight Edge band from Cracow called PROTEIN.
[PL] To było dość proste równanie – Paweł i Słoń z VICIOUSXREALITY postanowili wystartować z małym labelem wydającym kasety zaprzyjaźnionym zespołom, a my akurat byliśmy w momencie nagrywania “On the ropes”. Do wydania EPki w Refuse Records czasu było sporo, więc postanowiliśmy wydać trzy kawałki (dwa z ep + cover OPERATION IVY) na promo, żeby mieć coś na nadchodzące koncerty. Paweł i Słoń ogarnęli kwestie produkcyjne i kaseta wyszła w małym nakładzie. Od tamtego czasu Y2Y Records wciąż się rozwija i ma na swoim koncie demo RADIANCE i kasetową wersję “Down The Drain” FIGHT THEM ALL a pod koniec tego lata wejdą do major league wydając na winylu nową EPkę BRIGHT LIGHT. W planach jest też debiut nowego zespołu youth crew straight edge z Krakowa, czyli PROTEIN.
[EN] Your latest EP was released on Refuse Records. What happened to the Elephant Skin label and how did you get Robert interested in putting out your record?
[PL] Nowa EP wyszła nakładem Refuse Records. Co się stało ze współpracą z Elephant Skin i jak skłoniliście Roberta do zainteresowania tym materiałem?
[EN] It’s hard for me to out myself in Michał’s shoes, but as far as I know, Elephant Skin Records slowed down a bit and it’s on hiatus. It is not without harm for the scene, as the label was the life-blood of Polish hardcore. It doesn’t mean it won’t come back with some more releases and a new issue of Cudowne Lata Zine, which I truly hope for. Michał didn’t go anywhere, he’s still attending shows and he’s a good friend of ours. You can hit him up at some gigs and you can still order stuff from his webstore. We appreciate our previous cooperation and we’ll be thrilled to work with him again haha.
Back when we recorded ”On The Ropes”, we were looking for a label and since Elephant Skin slowed down a bit, and we were at full throttle, we reached out to Robert Refuse. He’s a good friend that already put out records for Michał and Irek’s bands (DOUBLE VISION and BURST IN), so it was quite natural. There’s not too many dedicated, hard working and passionate DIY labels as Refuse Records out there and I truly believe we fit into its frames quite well.
[PL] Ciężko mi jest się wypowiadać w imieniu Michała, ale z tego co się orientuję Elephant Skin Records trochę zwolnił z wydawaniem nowych rzeczy i w tym momencie jest on hiatus. Jest to duża szkoda dla tej sceny, bo była to w pewnym momencie spora siła napędowa wielu zespołów. Nie oznacza to oczywiście, że nie wróci w pewnym momencie z nowym wydawnictwem lub kolejnym numerem Cudowne Lata Zine, za co trzymam kciuki, ale chyba się szybko na to nie zapowiada. Michał nie zniknął, wciąż jest obecny na koncertach i jest naszym dobrym kolegą. Czasem można spotkać go na koncertach z distro Elephant Skin, a ze sklepu wysyłkowego ES wciąż można zamawiać. Naszą współpracę z nim wspominamy bardzo dobrze i chętnie ją kiedyś ponowimy haha.
W momencie nagrywania “On The Ropes” szukaliśmy wydawcy i jako, że Elephant Skin trochę zwolniło, a my parliśmy jak taran do przodu, uderzyliśmy do Roberta Refuse. On jest dobrym znajomym, wydawał już wcześniej płyty zespołom Michałą i Irka czyli DOUBLE VISION i BURST IN i był to naturalny bieg rzeczy. Niewiele jest wydawnictw tak zaangażowanych i bezkompromisowych jak Refuse Records i myślę, że dobrze wpisujemy się w jego ramy.
[EN] Are you looking for some more help to co-release the EP, whether in the States, Asia, or elsewhere?
[PL] Szukacie innych możliwości wydawniczych za granicą, w Stanach, Azji lub innych miejscach?
[EN] To be honest, we haven’t thought about that, mostly due to the fact that Refuse Records covers most of these places. We’re not trying to push it too hard and somehow people find their way to our work. We’d be very open to discuss such thing if someone is interested though. We’re playing as much shows as possible and we get offers from many surprising places, haha. One of our crazy, yet very possible plans, is heading to Japan.
[PL] Prawdę powiedziawszy w ogóle nad tym nie myśleliśmy, biorąc pod uwagę prosty fakt, że Refuse Records dociera we wszystkie te miejsca. Nie szukamy na siłę dróg dotarcia do ludzi, w jakiś sposób ludzie znajdują nas. Jeżeli ktoś kiedyś zwróci się do nas z takim pytaniem możemy porozmawiać. Staramy się grać jak najwięcej koncertów i propozycje przychodzą z całkiem szalonych – z naszego punktu widzenia – miejsc haha. Naszym szalonym, ale też całkiem realnym planem jest trasa po Japonii.
[EN] Ok, back to the record, could you outline the main issues the new EP shares with the listeners? What subjects have you enjoyed commenting in your lyrics?
[PL] Ok, jeśli chodzi o nowy materiał, możecie powiedzieć coś więcej o głównych tematach poruszanych w tekstach? Jakie wątki lubicie brać na warsztat pisząc nowe kawałki?
[EN] It’s been some time since I wrote these lyrics, so reading them now seems like travel back in time. I had been in a pretty bad mental state at that time and it apparently translated into the lyrics. My goal was not to decompose the problems of the modern world, so it was more of a reaction to all the bad happenings and people I met on the way. Deep inside, I’m an idealist, so every time I encounter awfulness of this world, it hurts down deep inside. And of cours,e there’s „Blizzard of 2016” – I guess I haven’t told abyone, but it’s about straight edge.
[PL] Minęło trochę czasu od kiedy pisałem te teksty i gdy ponownie je czytam jest to trochę jak podróż w wehikule czasu. Byłem wtedy w dość złej formie psychicznej i to w jakiś sposób przełożyło się na teksty. Nie miałem zamiaru rozgrzebywać żadnych dogłębnych problemów tego świata, to była naturalna reakcja na wszystkie złe rzeczy i paskudnych ludzi na mojej drodze. W głębi serca jestem idealistą i za każdym razem, gdy z stykam się z ohydztwami tego świata, coś w środku bardzo mnie boli. No i oczywiście jest “Blizzard of 2016”, chyba nikomu tego jeszcze nie powiedziałem, ale ten tekst jest o straight edge.

[EN] What are some of the main obstacles in making HEATSEEKER more active band?
[EN] Haha, that’s a very good question, but as it goes with most of the bands, it’s life. Commmon everyday life. Duties, work, family. Each of us is well dedicated for this band and we all have to make a lot of compromises, so the question should rather be ‘what are the reasons for still keeping it up and playing?’ hahaha. We’d like to play everywhere, record more, see each other more frequently, but we’re all at this stage of life where it’s not without harm for our private lives. Maybe 10 years ago we’d be more active, but as for 2017, we still get along. Besides, Irek plays in the newly formed EMBITTER, Dominik is in SHAME, and Mąka in GUIDING LIGHTS. All of these bands are active, recording, and playing shows.
[PL] Haha to jest bardzo dobre pytanie, ale tak jak w przypadku każdego innego zespołu jest to życie. Takie zwykłe, codzienne. Obowiązki, praca, rodzina. Każdy z nas poświęca temu zespołowi dużo i idzie na pewne kompromisy, więc pytanie powinno raczej brzmieć “jakie są powody, że jeszcze gracie?” hahaha. Chcielibyśmy grać wszędzie, nagrywać więcej, częściej się widywać, ale też każdy z nas jest w takim wieku, że ucierpi na tym reszta naszego życia. Może 10 lat temu moglibyśmy być bardziej aktywni, ale jak na 2017 całkiem dobrze dajemy sobie radę. Poza tym, Irek gra jeszcze w nowopowstałym EMBITTER, Dominik w SHAME, a Mąka w GUIDING LIGHTS, wszystkie z nich nagrywają, grają koncerty i są dość aktywnymi zespołami.
[EN] How would you assess current situation in Polish hardcore punk scene? How would you comment on its fertility and condition in 2016?
[PL] Jak oceniacie obecny moment w rozwoju Polskiej społeczności hardcore punk? Jak oceniacie płodność i kondycję naszych rodzimych reprezentantów sceny?
[EN] PLHC is currently coming out of the stagnation phase. Kind of like a snake shedding its skin. I sincerely hope something emerges from that. We have a number of new emerging bands like EMBITTER, SCYTHE, GLAMOUR, PROTEIN, NEGATIVE VIBES, NATIVE LUNGS, and perhaps 10 more, which I don’t know about. There are labels and distributions that are interested in putting out Polish bands, there are a couple of contrary ideas and promoters that don’t afraid to pump in some money into not necessarily profitable shows. people come and people go. You can see a bunch of younng kids at shows that are actually really stoked about what they see, and that’s really comforting. Recalling the good old days is something that’s been circulating since I am invovled, which is 1999. That’s part of that old punk conservatism that stops younger participants from being too optimisting and enthusiastic. This scene goes through its better and worse days and most of the pros are fueled by the younger generation. From my perspective, it’s going really well and if someone has a different opinion, then he can stay home, jerk off and listen to the CRO-MAGS demo.
[PL] PLHC jest obecnie w momencie wychodzenia ze stanu stagnacji. Coś jak wąż zrzucający starą skórę. Mam nadzieję, że wyjdzie z tego coś dobrego. Powstają nowe zespoły jak EMBITTER, SCYTHE, GLAMOUR, PROTEIN, NEGATIVE VIBES, NATIVE LUNGS i pewnie z dziesięć, o których jeszcze nic nie wiem. Są wydawnictwa, które chcą wydawać polskie zespoły, jest wiele różnych ścierających sie pomysłów, są organizatorzy, którzy nie boją się wtopić. Ludzie odchodzą, ludzie przychodzą. Widuje sporo młodych na koncertach autentycznie zajaranych tym, co widzą i to mnie cieszy. Gadanie o starych dobrych czasach słyszę od kiedy jestem w tej scenie czyli od 99 roku. To jest ten paskudny punkowy konserwatyzm, który tak wielu młodym ludziom każe powstrzymać wszelki optymizm i entuzjazm. Ta scena przeżywa swoje lepsze i gorsze momenty, te lepsze są napędzane przez młodych, pełnych zapału ludzi. Z mojej własnej perspektywy jest bardzo dobrze, jeżeli ktoś ma inne zdanie może zostać w domu, zwalić konia i posłuchać se demo CRO-MAGS.
[EN] How about hardcore punk in general? Can you give a big-picture view of the current trends, good or bad things that you think will shape its future?
[PL] A jeśli chodzi o scenę hc/punk ogólnie? Jakie macie globalne spojrzenie na współczesne trendy oraz dobre i złe aspekty, które mogą ukształtować przyszłość?
[EN] It’s quite a complex subject, you know. To me, it’s all like repeating the old patterns in order to convey new ideas that are crucially needed for the world today. I don’t really care about the state of punk rock, but as long it’s a platform for conversation and progressive ideas, it has my full backing. The econoic crisis, the Central-Liberal apathy and information chaos of social media resulted in the resurgence of nationalism and conservatism. And if punk has any sort of future, that’s exactly contrary to this shit. The future lays is alternative attitudes that draw from the 80s and the 90s and create something fresh. The sexual minorities and women finally have their voice heard and that’s a positive trend, that’s unfortunately becoming a tasty marketing treat for corporations. And that’s what future is about, not another reunion or another record sounding like a copy of SSD’s ”Kids will have their say”.
[PL] Wiesz, to dość złożony temat. Dla mnie to wszystko jest w tym momencie w pewnym sensie odtwarzaniem starych wzorców formalnych do przekazania nowych idei, które są potrzebne temu światu. Nie dbam za bardzo o kondycję punk rocka, ale jeżeli tylko jest dobrym przekaźnikiem postępowych idei, ma moje pełne poparcie. Kryzys ekonomiczny, apatia centro-liberałów i chaos informacyjny social mediów doprowadził do powrotu postaw nacjonalistycznych i konserwatywnych. I jeżeli punk rock ma jakąkolwiek przyszłość, to właśnie w kontrze do tego syfu. Przyszłość leży w postawach alternatywnych wykorzystujących formy z lat 80’ i 90’ do stworzenia czegoś świeżego. Mniejszości seksualne i kobiety w końcu dochodzą do głosu i jest to pozytywny globalny trend, do którego powoli swoje łapy wyciągają korporacje. W tym jest przyszłość, na pewno nie w kolejnym reunionie czy nagraniu płyty brzmiącej jeden do jednego jak “Kids will have their say” SSD.
[EN] Ok, so what are your next steps? Let’s wrap it up and share a timeline for your new release and touring.
[PL] Ok, a więc co dalej? Jakie kolejne kroki planujecie z HEATSEEKER? Co planujecie na kolejne miesiące, zarówno jeśli chodzi o nagrywanie i koncerty?
[EN] Our next step is the upcoming tour that we kick off in a couple of days at Pre-Fluff Show in Prague, and continue through Fluff Fest, and stops in Warsaw, Koszyce, Wrocław, Berlin, and Toruń. Right after the tour, we’ll be heading to the studio to record a new EP that will contain 5 new tracks and probably some sick cover. I literally can’t wait for that. Then we plan to release it and play as much as possible. There will be a couple of cool opportunities this coming Fall, including the “Nacjonalizm?- Nie, dziękuję!” Fest and Youth2Youth Showcase that will bring a full cross-section of the label’s worka at a couple of gigs in Poland, and probably some treks around Mińsk and Grodno. Oh, and of course, that Japanese tour we mentioned, haha.
[PL] Kolejny krok to kilka koncertów, które zagramy już za parę dni zaczynając od Pre-Fluff Show w Pradze, przez Fluff, potem Warszawa, Koszyce, Wrocław, Berlin i Toruń. Tuż po powrocie z trasy wchodzimy do studia i nagrywam nową EPkę, pięć kawałków plus pewnie jakiś szalony cover, już nie mogę się doczekać. Potem chcemy to wydać i grać jak najwięcej. Na jesień też jest kilka planów koncertowych w tym “Nacjonalizm?- Nie, dziękuję!” Fest i Youth2Youth Showcase, czyli pełen przekrój wytwórni na paru koncertach po Polsce, potem też pewnie jakieś weekendowe wypady w okolice Mińska i Grodna. No, a potem oczywiscie ta trasa po Japonii haha
[EN] Lastly, on a personal level, what motivates you to keep up your work with HEATSEEKER? What are your own sources of inspiration?
[PL] Ok, ostatnia rzecz. Co motywuje i inspiruje Was do kontynuacji tej przygody i rozwijanie projektu HEATSEEKER?
[EN] I think about it a lot. The question circles back to me with every year and every life decision, I answer it and the balance is again regained. I’m still into it, cause I love it. I’m doing it for myself. It’s a good personal test of your capabillities and creativity. A test for vitality and honesty. I had my moments of doubt when I clashed my aspirations with the hopes and desires of my peers, like a loan, all inclusive holidays and don’t giving a fuck about the world. In the course of time I started to trust my intuition and inner voice that tells me what’s better for myself. It took just one hearing of “We’re not in this alone” by YOUTH OF TODAY to put me back on tracks. Also, I’m doing it for the rest of the band, as we really get along. Spending time together is always greay and each of our trips is a one hell of an adventure. Also, seeing people honestly stoked about what we do doesn’t seem to bother me. I don’y think I would be able to keep it going if one of these elements was missing. I like the whole proces, from writing, rehearsing, to playing shows, recording, creating artwork, printing shirts and records. There’s this unique DIY aspect to it that has always resonated with my character – to be able to control the whole process and its results. Also, it somehow corresponds to my job. Obviously, meeting all the genuine, maverick, and fucked up people is very inspiring. Lastly, there’s the music that makes you want to jump our of the fuckin’ window hahaha.
[PL] Często się nad tym zastanawiam. To pytanie wraca z każdym rokiem i każdą życiową decyzją, odpowiadam sobie na nie i balans zostaje zachowany. Wciąż to robię, bo to kocham. Nie robię tego dla nikogo innego, jak tylko dla siebie. To dobry sprawdzian własnych możliwości i własnej kreatywności. To też pewnego rodzaju test na młodość i szczerość. Były momenty zwątpienia zwykle, gdy ścierałem własne aspiracje z aspiracjami moich rówieśników czyli kredyt, wakacje all inclusive i wyjebane na cały świat. Ale z biegiem czasu zacząłem bardziej ufać swojej intuicji i wewnętrznemu głosowi, który mówi mi, co jest dla mnie właściwe. Jedno przesłuchanie “We’re not in this alone” YOUTH OF TODAY zawsze stawiało mnie z powrotem do pionu. Robię to też dla reszty zespołu, bardzo dobrze się dogadujemy i lubimy to, co robimy. Przebywanie z nimi i każdy wyjazd to super przeżycie. Nie przeszkadza w tym wszystkim też to, że widzę ludzi autentycznie zajaranych tym co gramy. Gdyby zabrakło jednego z tych trzech elementów, wątpię żebym mógł to dalej ciągnąć. Lubię cały ten proces, pisania, prób, koncertów, nagrywanie, rysowanie okładki, drukowania koszulek i płyt. Jest w tym ten pewien aspekt DIY, który zawsze rezonował z moim charakterem, panowanie nad całym procesem i jego wyniki. W jakiś sposób to koresponduje z moim zawodem. No i oczywiście inspirujące jest poznawanie tych wszystkich, nieszablonowych i pojebanych ludzi. No i jest jeszcze muzyka która sprawia, że masz ochotę wyskoczyć przez okno hahaha
