Tonne wastes no time in merging unruly stoner riffs, searing black metal accents, and a brash dose of hardcore. There’s no modest middle ground in their jam-based process: if it feels right, they keep it.
The trio—Valtteri, Johannes, and Milja—came together through the underground hub Kulttuurikeskus Maanalainen in Tampere, jamming until they locked down a sound that resonates across D-beat rawness, bluesy grooves, and bursts of prog.
Their creative spark lies in communal noise-building, shaped by separate backgrounds: skatepunk, psychedelic, and a sharp photographic eye that now extends into album covers, visuals, and all else under the Tonne banner.
The band’s newest track, “Sink,” growls with raw, angry lyrics rooted in frustration, pulling from bleak black metal influences yet driving forward with unstoppable energy. It marks the first single from the debut album ”I”. Slated for a March 7th release, the album will be out just in time for their upcoming European tour (see the dates below).

They’re still layering in new songs, unafraid of studio sessions where mistakes twist into new ideas. Meanwhile, the Tampere scene remains at their back, propped up by venues like Vastavirta-Klubi and Kulttuurikeskus Maanalainen—key outposts that cultivate local and nationwide underground acts.
Check out the full interview below for insights on Tonne’s inspirations, the meaning behind their lyrics, the upcoming releases, and their take on Tampere’s evolving scene.
Hey guys! Let’s kick off with your commentary on your inspirations, your creative process, how you’ve reached this point, and how you view your evolution so far.
We met through a Tampere based music venue Kulttuurikeskus Maanalainen, where each one of us used to be a trainee for a while. Of course we became regular customers afterwards. Musicwise we come from different areas. Valtteri plays in a skatepunk rockband “Glass Wipe” and Johannes is based more in the psychedelic music scene. Playing in bands such as “Skyjoggers”, “.poolboys” and “Elliott Webb”.
Although she has never played in a band before, Milja is a known and respected photographer in Finland. Recently working with bands such as Stam1na, Mokoma, Stoned Statues, Suite Green and Hautaustoimisto.
In late 2023, We (Valtteri and Johannes) decided to have a jam session which created this D-beat/Black Metal world that both of us were really into. After making a full setlist of songs we still felt that we should try to keep this a secret from our mutual friends. Couple of months later Milja joined the group and the band started to take action. First weeklong tour in the baltics was set on october 2024 and now the three week european tour is set on March 2025, promoting TONNE’s debut album which will be released in March 7th, 2025.
Our creative process is really jam based with everyone bringing ideas to the table. We try to find the right feeling through playing together and leaving a lot of space and time for errors which we are not afraid of. If the song feels right; it is right.
We all have intresses and talent in visual arts, so we try to leave space for each one to be equally creative in that area as well.
Give us a quick comment on the lyrical sphere of “Sink”.
“Sink” was one of the first ideas we came up with TONNE. We both wanted to have really raw and angry lyrics to shout our guts out. During this time Valtteri was heavily influenced by Mayhem as well.
Is there a connection between the music and visuals? I’d love to hear your thoughts on the cover art.
A: Like mentioned earlier, we are all creative visually as well. Playing in bands is a great source of inspiration and creativity in visual art! At this time Milja takes the photos, Johannes creates the videos and Valtteri is in charge of the album cover. The responsibilities might change through the years though.
So what are your next steps, plans, and hopes for the project in 2025?
Even though we have played together for only a year now, we have a lot of plans for 2025 and the following years.
In our opinion, we have come a long way in such a short time and we’re not stopping here! We have our debut album “I” ready and a three-week European tour starting in March following summertime festivals and a baltic tour at the end of 2025.
Our set list does not only consist of the songs from the debut album — we’re constantly making new ones and can’t wait to go back to the studio and share them with the world.
Let’s give a quick nod to your local alternative and underground scene. How has it evolved since you’ve been part of it? Are there any bands, labels, or key players you’d recommend?
Tampere is the place to be! The music scene is very much alive both in high class and underground scenes. Therefore there is a lot to choose from. Venues such as Vastavirta-Klubi, Kulttuurikeskus Maanalainen, Olympia, Telakka and Pakkahuone bring out a lot of bands for everyone to like.
After about 10 years the city has changed a bit. A lot of underground venues and old factory areas have been torn down but the city seems to go forward in longevity.
Our recommendation list of Tampere based bands would be too long but we want to make a special shout-out for Vastavirta-Klubi and Kulttuurikeskus Maanalainen who are a big part of supporting the local and nationwide underground scene!
