Masma Dream World, the experimental project of Devi Mambouka, returns with Please Come to Me, an album steeped in mysticism and raw emotion, set for release on February 21 via Valley of Search.
The title track is out now, accompanied by a haunting visualizer that captures the ceremonial tone of her work. This latest offering follows her groundbreaking 2020 debut, Play at Night, which fused Gabonese rhythms, field recordings, and skittering electronics into a deeply personal sonic labirynths.
โCalling for Mother in the darkness of this existence, desperately yearning for her to come to me,โ Mambouka explains, framing the album as an invocation of the “Ultimate Divine Feminine Power.” The music invites listeners into a ritual spaceโa communion with spirits, memories, and the unseen world.
Born in Gabon and shaped by a multicultural upbringing spanning Singapore and the Bronx, Mambouka draws on her heritage and life experiences to create something that feels both deeply rooted and otherworldly. Her fatherโs indigenous Bahoumbou roots, her motherโs Bengali and Cantonese lineage, and her immersion in NYCโs nightlife and spirituality inform every note. From rainforest rituals to Catholic school corridors, her path has been marked by the constant presence of spirits, both real and imagined.
Please Come to Me was recorded over two weekends, though its essence has been years in the making. Inspired by Hindu mysticism, meditation, and sound therapy, Mambouka combines technical mastery with spiritual depth. Field recordings from Gabonese rainforests, Balinese temples, and Italian church bells blend seamlessly with chants and reversed language, pulling the listener into a dreamlike state. The album includes echoes from her pastโdamaged spiritual tapes from her late aunt and cave recordings from Franceโwoven into compositions that defy conventional structure.
Her first single from this era, โAncient DNA,โ released in October, is thunderous and ceremonial, setting the tone for the albumโs journey into the liminal spaces of human experience. With Please Come to Me, Mambouka invites listeners to walk alongside her into the shadow world, a place where pain transforms, and music becomes a healing force.
Masma Dream World performs live at New Yorkโs Public Records on February 20, a night devoted to Parashakti, the embodiment of the “Ultimate Divine Feminine Power,” featuring the Zola Jesus Noise Project NIKA.
