“End,” the enigmatic new album from Explosions in the Sky, represents a fresh departure for the band. Drawing inspiration from a series of emotional and impactful themes such as death, the end of relationships, and other significant life changes, the album uses its meditative undertones to explore the concept of endings and beginnings. Today, the band unleashed the album’s opener “Ten Billion People“.
Every song on the album is said to come from a personal narrative or idea that the band has transformed into a unique soundscape, exploring both the melancholy of endings and the anticipatory excitement of new beginnings.
The band members explain that the album title, “End,” can be interpreted in numerous ways, emphasizing the duality of terminations as both endpoints and starting points.
“End” seems to represent a milestone in the band’s musical evolution, combining the atmospheric, ethereal quality of their early work with the experimental sonics of their later records. The band’s extensive experience scoring for film and television is also apparent in the album’s cinematic depth and emotional intensity.
The album, released on September 15, 2023, is available in a limited edition 180 gram pink vinyl, with an edition size of 5,000. Customers can purchase up to two copies each. All vinyl formats come with an MP3 download coupon included in the package.
