Instrumental rock has a much longer history than modern post-rock. Early rock instrumentals often centred on guitar, organ or saxophone, with Duane Eddy, Link Wray and the Ventures among the major guitar-driven examples. Surf music built another large instrumental branch, and later decades carried the format through funk, guitar virtuosity and, by the 1990s, indie and post-rock.
IDIOTEQ’s current coverage is strongly guitar-based. For What You Burn represent a direct band form, while hubris. and If These Trees Could Talk sit close to modern post-rock. Podłoga move into slower ambient territory, and Comprehending bring math-rock precision into the same instrumental field.
The range extends through Jagged City, who come out of parallel hardcore and post-rock histories, and Nook & Cranny, whose record grew from unedited jam sessions.
