Boles sees its restless transition between moods and genresβfrom anthemic lead single “Finish It,” to the prog-rock explosion of”Headlong,” to the aching introspection of closer “I Go Too”βas a reflection of the experiences that informed the music:
βI wrote this album to remind me of who and what I love and have lost. And those arenβt isolated emotional eventsβthey recur, they converge and conflict with each other, theyβre constantly subject to reinterpretation. Iβve tried to capture that feeling of never having your perspective or your sense of purpose figured out.
The result is an urgentset of songs with a narrative flow that allows for new discoveries on each listenβamong them, thematic ties to Align in Timeβs first album,Me & My Arrow, released in 2011. Muchlike that album, On a Spiralnever settles in one place for very long, but Boles notes a common thread throughits songs: βIβve grown to appreciate in the past eight years that optimism doesnβt endure just by virtue of what it is. Itβs something you have to work at. I hope thatothers can find some inspiration and solace in how thatβs conveyed in my music.β
