Boles sees its restless transition between moods and genresโfrom anthemic lead single “Finish It,” to the prog-rock explosion of”Headlong,” to the aching introspection of closer “I Go Too”โas a reflection of the experiences that informed the music:
โI wrote this album to remind me of who and what I love and have lost. And those arenโt isolated emotional eventsโthey recur, they converge and conflict with each other, theyโre constantly subject to reinterpretation. Iโve tried to capture that feeling of never having your perspective or your sense of purpose figured out.
The result is an urgentset of songs with a narrative flow that allows for new discoveries on each listenโamong them, thematic ties to Align in Timeโs first album,Me & My Arrow, released in 2011. Muchlike that album, On a Spiralnever settles in one place for very long, but Boles notes a common thread throughits songs: โIโve grown to appreciate in the past eight years that optimism doesnโt endure just by virtue of what it is.
