St. Petersburg, Florida based Spanish Needles, a band that first took the stage in November 2021, has just put out a new EP titled “Sifting Through the Wreckage.” Recorded in the spring of 2023 by Norval Alleman at Norval Sound in St. Petersburg, FL, and mastered by Will Killingsworth at Dead Air Studios, this single-sided 12” EP comes on purple vinyl, showcasing the band’s multi-ethnic, multi-racial take on unapologetically political and grounded in working-class realities. Their songs dive into the everyday grind, tackling themes of labor, inequality, and the harshness of life under late-stage capitalism.
“Sifting Through the Wreckage” features tracks like “George Carlin,” which is a tribute to union solidarity, reflecting on how collective strength can pull you through the toughest times.
Then there’s “Michael Cera,” which deals with the emotional fallout of revisiting the past.
“Steven Wright” critiques the double standards between bosses and employees, while “Dom DeLouise” addresses the neglected signs of trouble in youth that often lead to predictable, tragic outcomes.
The two-part “Mary Steenburgen” explores the rapid, unforgiving changes in urban landscapes, forcing people to either adapt quickly or move on.
Spanish Needles draws inspiration from a range of influences, including 80s and 90s melodic punk and indie rock, with nods to bands like Descendants, Jawbreaker, Leatherface, and anarcho-punk outfits like The Mob and Omega Tribe.
The EP is a reflection of their diverse backgrounds and the tumultuous times we live in, particularly from the perspective of being Arab-American today.
