Speed metal came out of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal meeting hardcore punk in the early 1980s, played fast and harsh but with a clean, precise attack. Thrash grew out of that with more room to vary tempo, lean on groove and stretch the playing. Thrash riffing is intricate and very fast, and the vocals sometimes drop melody altogether. Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer led it, set against the pop metal selling on the charts in the same decade, and they built cult followings outside radio and television.
Australian band Harlott use the form to write about algorithmic deception and the death of the gods, while classic thrash band Exhorder played songs from “Slaughter In The Vatican” and “Defectum Omnium” to a small Sioux Falls crowd in 2025.
