“On August 13th from our home in Benson, MN, we sent three bobble heads replicas of ourselves into space using a 600 gram weather balloon,” explains singer/guitarist Dylan Matthiesen of TINY MOVING PARTS. “The 2 hour flight was captured by a GoPro camera enclosed in a styrofoam cooler alongside a GPS tracker and a stack of heat packs to help brave the -60 degree F (-15 C) temperatures. The spacecraft reached a height of over 80,000 ft (24,384 meters), capturing the Earth’s curve and the beauty of a world just beyond our grasp.” The band has paired the phenomenal footage they collected with the track “Entrances & Exits” from their sophomore full-length Pleasant Living, recently released on Triple Crown Records.
“About 2 hours into its journey, the GPS stopped sending us signals, ” continued Dylan. “We drove all over the farmlands of Minnesota with the slim hopes of it turning up somewhere. Eventually, we gave up and lost hope. It wasn’t until October 10th, almost 2 months later, that we received a call from a farmer, our new friend Kurt, almost 50 miles away who found the pack while combing through his bean farm.”
Tiny Moving Parts consists of guitarist/vocalist Dylan Mattheisen and his cousins, brothers Billy Chevalier (drums) and Matt Chevalier (bass/vocals). Over the past two years of non-stop touring, they’ve quickly gained attention for their complex musicianship, outstanding songs, frenzied live sets, and Dylan’s nonstop, irrepressible grin. When you hear about a band coming out of nowhere, it’s a sure bet that very few of them mean it in the way that these guys do. Hailing from the tiny town of Benson, which boasts a population of just 3,000 people, they have plenty of practice making their own fun – and it’s quite apparent on their sophomore record, Pleasant Living. Recorded by J. Robbins at his Magpie Cage Studios in Baltimore, Pleasant Living shows a band that has matured, boasting sing-alongs alongside thought-out, complex instrumentals. The album is currently available for purchase via the Triple Crown Records site.
Their debut album This Couch Is Long and Full of Friendship was released in 2013 via Kind of Like Records and Black Numbers. Tiny Moving Parts will embark on a North American tour this fall with Dads, Nai Harvest and Choir Vandals, including an appearance at The Fest 13 (all current tour dates below).
