TROPHY EYES share new single and music video “Blue Eyed Boy”

2 mins read

Hopeless Records has released a new track by Trophy Eyes called “Blue Eyed Boy,” which has been highly anticipated since the band’s previous single “Nobody Said” over a year ago.

The band has been releasing amazing songs, but fans have been eagerly waiting for a new album since their last one in 2018. The song blends the gritty sound of Trophy Eyes from their earlier years with the synth-rock sound from their more recent years, and this unique combination is a signature style of the band. The lyrics are vulnerable, while the music is upbeat, creating a contrast that is executed excellently.

The inspiration behind the track is a trip the vocalist, John Floreani, took back to his hometown where he reconnected with a friend who had regressed into their old ways. This friend was someone who Floreani had mourned the death of long ago, and seeing him again brought back childhood.

Trophy Eyes’ John Floreani shares: ‘Blue Eyed Boy’ was written about a trip I took back to my hometown. One friend in particular, maybe my best friend, had recently moved back and regressed into their old ways. I’d mourned the death of this friend long ago, as did the rest of us in our small social circle. To see him again brought me great childhood joy yet simultaneously an overwhelming sense of dread. I was reminded of something my mother told me as a young boy when my grandmother died; “if you see her now, like this, it’s the only way you’ll remember her. Best hold on to the good times, you’ll always have those”.

Trophy Eyes’ new single “Blue Eyed Boy” is a departure from their previous sound and showcases grittier vocals from lead singer John. The chorus is delivered with an interesting staccato and the guitar hook is catchy and simple. The lyrics capture the emotion of a faded relationship and the writer is impressed with the overall performance. The single surpassed expectations of many of the first listeners and we are excited for the upcoming album.

Lyrics:

Down the hall
First one on the right hand wall
Knock because he locks his door
And we don’t see him anymore
Before I knew I’m back again
I would give back everything
To stop this ever happening
‘Cause I can’t even look at you
And see my friend

Let me in
Under your skin
I’m asking you as your best friend
I can fix this thing you did
‘Cause I can’t see blue eyed boy dead

Let me in
Under your skin
I’m asking you as your best friend
It’s worse than you think it is
And I can’t see blue eyed boy dead

Cue the smoke
Window closed, it makes me choke
Hide behind your small talk jokes
But I can see you’re bent and broke
And we have no new memories
Reminiscing endlessly
About when you and I were teens
Does that not tell you anything
Oh, how the needle stings

I’d still die for you but not for me
Best believe
I’ve tried everything

Let me in
Under your skin
I’m asking you as your best friend
I can fix this thing you did
‘Cause I can’t see blue eyed boy dead

Let me in
Under your skin
I’m asking you as your best friend
It’s worse than you think it is
And I can’t see blue eyed boy dead

I’d still die for you but not for me
Best believe
I’ve tried everything

Do it for yourself if not for me
Can’t you see?
It’s taken everything
